Cannot connect to XP running VPN Server (authentication not workin

I have an XP box on which I've set up a vpn server so I can test a VPN
connection for one of my clients.

I believe I have the correct ports configured on my router and windows
firewall. I am able to access Remote Desktop into the same machine on which
I'm trying to get the vpn server to work. I have a different IP range from
the DHCP range on my router. I have PPTP port 1723 open and have tested it.

When I look in the machine's firewall log I can see my remote connection
attempts but there is not answer...here are 2 examples from the log.

Date Time OPEN-INBOUND TCP [correct src ip] [correct dst ip] 22118 1723
Date Time CLOSE TCP [correct src ip] [correct dst ip] 22118 - - - -

or again...

Date Time OPEN-INBOUND TCP [correct src ip] [correct dst ip] 22124 1723
Date Time CLOSE TCP [correct src ip] [correct dst ip] 1723 22124

I never get to authenticat....Any ideas? Not sure what to try next.

You also need the router to pass GRE Protocol 47 traffic. Some routers call
that "PPTP Pass Through" or "VPN Pass Through" or in the case of the XP SP2
Windows Firewall automatically enable that traffic if TCP Port 1723 is open.
You can test PPTP VPN connections with a test detailed on this page in the
"PPTP Ping" and "VPN Traffic" sections...

If the GRE part of the test fails you may need to upgrade the firmware in
the router. You also might check with the manufacturer to see if they
support PPTP VPN through the router.
