Cannot get online after clean installation of XP. I am stuck.

I replaced my old HDD with a new one and re-installed XP. I have a direct
connection from the cable modem to the ethernet card. The Device Manager says
that the driver for the ethernet card is not installed. I didn't think I
needed to install a driver. TCP/IP is installed and the LAN setting is to
detect automatically.
It shows that I am connected, but I can't go online.

As a quick test:
Click Start, Run (type) Cmd [Enter]

Ipconfig /all [Enter]

Note IP Address, Gateway and DNS server
Gateway and DNS (Primary ) should be your Cable Modem's IP
*If IP address starts with 169.x.x.x then you are not configured
properly

Also does your cable modem provide NAT ( Network Address
Translation ) ?

After performing a "Clean Install" (fresh) install of XP
you should install the motherboard chipset drivers,
Video drivers, Network Chip or Card drivers, Sound
chip or card drivers, Etc.

Download and install these drivers from the PC manufacture's
web site for your make and model number or if a home built
PC then get the drivers from the motherboard manufacture's
web site.

Do not install drivers using Microsoft Update site!!!

Can't imagine why you'd have thought that. Of course, drivers are
necessary.

What happens when you install the WinXP-specific device drivers for
the computer's network adapter?

Thanks, Bruce. I really feel stupid. I thought Windows would have had a
generic ethernet driver. Anyway, I found the disk and I am back online.
