cannot download .zip / .exe files

Hello, I am on XP home and IE 6 sp1 - when I attempt to
download a .zip file from the net there is an icon in the
lower left corner of IE, but I have no idea where the
file is going to. I have been able to download some files
by doing a right click on the download icon/link
and "save target as...". But, why can't I just click on
the file and save to a folder of my choosing? BTW, on
the Windows Explorer tools/folder options/file types,
the .zip type is set to "confirm open after download".
Does anyone have a fix for this?
