IE6 - .zip, .exe files auto download in browser and don't open

A

Alyssa

I'm having a problem with IE 6, using WinXP.

Every time I click on a link to a .zip or .exe file, the browser auto
downloads the file instead of asking if I want to open or save file. Once
the file finishes downloading it just stays on the browser and does not
open.

I want IE to ask me if I want to save or open these file types again.

Please help

You set this for each file type, e.g. for .zip
Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types
Find the .zip association (may be WinZip File)
Edit, (or click Advanced on ME or XP) and check the "Confirm open
after download" box

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Explorer-View-Folder Options
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.

I see what you're talking about and "Confirm open after download" box was
already checked. I get this error with every file extension. Like, .mov,
mpg, .mp3. They all autodownload in browser and stay in the address bar.

That is odd!
I must admit, that after using that response several hundred times, I
may be getting a bit complacent.

A stab in the dark...

Read this and read between the lines a bit for other extensions:
----
If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303401

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.
-----

If you have anything at all under the Extension key, then do an export
of that key and let me see it.
(You can delete the whole Extensions key after you export it and see
what happens)
If there is a mention of NetZip, then uninstall it as it will probably
renew the invalid keys.

Returned, though I may be on the wrong track.

I must admit, I thought these restrictions from IE4 disappeared with
the introduction of IE6 or earlier.

I will be interested to see what the results from the OP will be.

I thought you had something there but no luck :(

Alyssa,

Until AE returns:

Set the "NoSelectDownloadDir" to "0"

What was in the Extension key before you deleted it?

Just about all file types. Right now I see file type .sit (mac compressed
file) will ask to open or download. Everything else auto downloads and
stays in browser without opening.
