cannot add or see printers after security updates

This has happened before, after doing a Microsoft update, I can no longer see
or add printers. BUT THEY STILL WORK. The only way I have found to fix this
is to re-install XP. NOW, I am upgrading 2 other computers in our office from
SP1 to SP2. When I did this of course I lost the add printers ability again.
BUT THEY STILL WORK. So...to fix this I would have to re-install XP, BUT now
I would be back to SP1.
The last time I asked about this no one had any ideas and wondered why it
was a problem as long as I could print. Well what if I need to add a printer
or change which printer is the default printer? Or what if I need to cancel a
print? I can't do any of this. I thought this was controled through a "cpl"
file but it is not.
PLEASE someone dig in and find us a solution. I can't be the only one with
this problem.
Thank you very much for your help,
Rick

The 'add a printer' wizard is a system file, as is the shortcut to it in the
printers folder. I would run the command 'sfc /scannow' to restore all system
files.

Thanks for the reply Mark,
It did not work.

I've been using MS drivers for my HP 722C printer, since Windows
XP came out. It works fine.. I don't have all the HP extras.. but
it works with all my programs AND I can cancel printing now,
where I couldn't before Windows XP.

This may be redundant, but did you try to find out if there were
newer updated drivers for your Printer from the printer's Web
site?
Also, these articles are well established at SP2 update web
site.. hope it helps.

Thanks for the reply EW,
Drivers are not the problem here. But even if they were, I have no way to
install updated drivers since I cannot access the printer icons to get at the
properties, which is where you update the drivers. Fun Huh??

For anyone interested in this post I found the problem. The printui.dll file
was missing from the windows\system32 folder.
