Can Remote Desktop be used to reach a pc through a DSL router.

I have a user who uses remote desktop to go from his home pc to his work
machine. He would like to go the other way.

He has a home network that uses a DSL router, hub, private LAN IPs, etc.
Can this be setup to come in from the outside world? He has used GotoMyPC
so obviously it can be done but he would like to do it for free with remote
desktop.

Is this do-able?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

If he sets up his router and (if he has one) software firewall to allow the
port to pass through to his machine - yes. He needs to know his external
IP - but if his router is a good one - it has the ability to use a dynamic
DNS service like dyndns.org to assign his router and easy-to-remember name
instead of a random IP address (well - he'll still have the random IP - but
he won't have to remember that.)

Port 3389 properly configured to 'pass-thru', must have XP Professional or
super-set (or Windows 2003 server) and must have an account in the "Remote
Desktop Users" group (can just be an admin) that has a password assigned to
it.

Depends if his work firewall allows for that. It might require additional
(free) tools to achieve that result (from office PC to home XP Pro). He
needs to find out which ports in firewall are open to the world. He should
make a note of those, when GotoMyPC was still running.
