Remote Desktop Connection - Bell South DSL network

Ken

I need a little help trouble shooting why I cannot use Remote Desktop
Connection to get control of an WinXP Pro system using another WinXP Pro or
Vista system. The WinXP Pro system I am having trouble with is on a Bell
South DSL connection in Kentucky. The computer(s) trying to get control via
the IP address are on the Comcast cable network. The Bell South ("New
AT&T") modem/router is a C90-610030-06 model number. Of course, Westell
will not let me download a manual since it is a "special" Bell South device.
I can ping the computer on the DSL network but Remote Desktop Connection
will not even attempt to connect. I have used Remote Desktop Connection on
several other WinXP Pro and Vista Ultimate systems with no problems. Can
somebody please give me a clue on what is going wrong? The Bell South web
site indicates that Kentucky uses a different modem that some other states.
I was ready to go buy a different modem but that seems to be another hurdle.

Remember you need to have TCP Port 3389 open/forwarded on any router or
firewall the Remote Desktop [RDC] host PC is behind. Many DSL modems are
also routers. So you need to either put the DSL modem/router in a bridge
mode or get into it and forward TCP Port 3389. On the PC your trying to
remotely control have someone go to the http://www.canyouseeme.org site and
run the test for TCP Port 3389. If the test passes then make sure your
calling with the correct public IP address, which is also reported by the
test site. You might be able to contact AT&T tech support and have them open
the port on the modem/router if you can't. Also check the PortForward.com
site for possible help.
