Can not colse any IE Browser instance - XP Professional

Once I launch an instance of the browser I can not close
it. It only gets closed when I shout down the computer.
I have been un-successful in un-installing IE6 to do a
fresh install. The installer keep tells me I have a
newer version installed and won't allow me to proceed.

Any suggestions?

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each need to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.
