Can I stop auto downloading of SP2 once started?

I'm helping a compture novice via email who lives 1000 miles away, has
XP with with SP1 and a slow 28K modem. His machine currently has a
virus ro spyware which we are trying to get rid of. Unfortunately,
Microsoft has started downloading SP2 to his machine and is at about
the 65% complete point. I told him to change his automatic update
options to do not download or install, but notify, which he did. But
it is still downloading. I want to tell him how to stop the download
so we can then solve the spyware or virus problem, do the proper
backups, set a system restore point etc. and install from the SP2 CD,
but I don't know how he can do that. Can any one tell me?

It seems that you are in trouble.........
Get rid of your trouble right away.......
Reinstall your computer to make sure it is free of viruses......
And you must buy a good antivirus to prevent further infection.........
For a computer user, it is our duty to stop virus transmition....

Hmm... not so easy for a novice of his stature. Perhaps someone else
has an alternate idea. If not, and I advise him to do as you say,
would your format, load XP from the original XP CD, and follow that
with SP2? i.e. would he need to install SP1 before SP2?

No you do not need to install SP1 before installing SP2.
SP2 has all the updates and fix's that are in SP1.

It will be alright to let it go ahead and download SP2 as long as he does
not start the install until he gets the computer clean, it is also a good
idea to stop all processes from running by right clicking them in the
taskbar and exit them, they will start back up when he restarts after the
SP2 install, also shut down the virus protection during install.

Turn off system restore this will delete any viruses that are within the
restore files then turn it back on after the complete cleaning, create a
restore point then install SP2.
