Can I stop SP2 from downloading - HELP!!

S

Stephen

Hi

Sometime back I made the mistake of allowing Microsoft
to automatically download the new Service Pack 2.

I am getting the normal round little icon with the flag
in my system tray - but I have no control like you normally
have with a download.

I cannot 'pause' or 'stop' it.

For the 3rd time in over a week the download has reached
35% and then stops.

Each 1% can take nearly two hours.

Can anyone suggest how I can STOP this download
so that I can go out and buy a magazine with SP2
on a CD as a freebie?

Thank you in advance - Stephen

Hi Stephen,

Just turn off the Automatic Updates (until you install XP SP2 from CD).
Click Start/Run and type SYSDM.CPL, Automatic Updates tab. Configure it
accordingly. Other option (not sure if this works in this case, as the
download has already started): Temporarily Disabling Delivery of Windows XP
Service Pack 2 Through Windows Update and Automatic Updates:

Go ahead and install. Personnally I find a lot more pros than cons to the
upgrade. Specially the pop-up blocker which is VERY efficient.

I just read this article. Did I understand it right? 120 days
after August 16, Microsoft is going to force people to update to
SP2? Do I understand that correctly.

What legal right does MS have to *make* me to *anything* with
their OS?

Agreed on the pop-up blocker. Stephen, if your system is generally
clean and stable and relatively recent, you shouldn't have any
problems.

To those who are having problems d/l the entire pack, one thing I
found is it really helps to d/l it following a clean boot of your
system. I often put my system on standby, so I can get up and running
again quickly. But SP2 would never successful install following a boot
from standby mode. Once I restarted and went through a full OS load,
it worked without a hitch.
