Can I delete a .dat file ?

WinNT4 (SP6a) and IE 6.0

My McAfee VirusScan program detected (6) virus files in a subfolder within
the folder named: Temporary Internet Files. For some reason the AV program
won't delete them.

The (6) virus files are reported by the AV program to be belong to (3) types
of viruses:
Exploit-CodeBase.gen
Exploit-ByteVerify
JS/Exploit-ScriptScrc.gen

These viruses are reported by McAfee to date back to 2002.

So I want to manually clean out that whole folder Temporary Internet Files.
Can I remove all of the subfolders except the one named Content.IE5?

Also there is a system DAT file within the folder Content.IE5 named index
(no extension). I'm wondering if the (6) infected files could have modified
that file named index already because when I read about the characteristics
of the above (3) virus types that somehow they can corrupt the registry.

If you believe your profile is infected/ corrupt then logon as local
administrator and delete the profile. When the user next logs on a new
profile will be created from an image in \default user
