Can anyone help with Epson Stylus 980 problem 2

My apologies the previous posting did not have the correct email
address.

I believe that I have created this problem by trying to clean the print
head of my Epson stylus 980.

I do a lot of printing and the printhead gets packed with paper dust
etc. which clogs the printhead nozzles. The only way to clear the head
of this dirt is to remove the printhead and let it sit and soak in a bit

of mild ammonia.

I have done this several times over the life of this printer and it has
been very successful.

This time I removed the head, cleaned it, reinstalled it but the print
quality was still very poor. First time this has happened.

It took two more times to get the print quality almost back to normal.
After reassembling the printer after the last cleaning I found I had a
new problem. The printer does not always complete its power on
initialization, or if it does it will not print a nozzle check. It goes
through the initial motions of the nozzle check but just before the
point at which it starts printing, the printhead stops on the edge of
the paper and the green printer light goes out (again one can hear
sucking noises).

If it does not successfully complete the power-up initialization the
symptoms are:

It powers up, the gears make their noises and the printhead moves
slightly to the left off the home position and then just stays there,
sucking sounds can be heard and the green power light goes out. The
other lights are out as well.

Turning the printer power button on and off does nothing. I discovered
after unplugging the printer and waiting about 5 minutes that it was
possible to power up the printer again, but it justs goes through the
same cycle described above each time.

I now understand that I may need the epson service program to "reset" an

EPROM firmware setting. Does anyone know where to get the Epson 980
"service program"? or know any other way I may be able to recover from
this?

Thank you, any help would be appreciated.

I'm afraid some cleaning liquid leaked into the piezoelements area
causing a shortage, and the current drawn by the head drive circuit is
too high.

The printer's power supply overload sensor cuts the P/S operation
until the main electrolytic capacitor discharges from 150V to almost
0V through resistor, so some time (several minutes) must pass.

Sorry to say - this almost always kills the printhead. You can only
try to put it in warm, dry place for several days and check if the
moisture has vaporised.

Have you replaced the soak pads or removed and cleaned them, this shows up
with all leds flashing.

When removing the print head it does have to be alined, radial alignment with
a service test program, I found mine for the Epson 740 on the Epson site..
