Camera not detected by Wizard

L

Lynn Oliver

When I plug my Canon S50 in via USB I hear a beep and see the device
correctly identified in Device Manager, but Scanner and Camera Wizard does
not detect the camera. Neither does the Canon app (ZoomBrowserEX). This
used to work.

I can hook the camera to another computer and it detects correctly, so the
camera is working.

Any ideas?

Did you try unpluging the USB AT THE COMPUTER, then plug it in again
with the camera powered up and ready to go?

I've tried that, but it doesn't help. It used to work on this computer and
still works on two others.

Are Same cables in use on all computers? (since this newsgroup is
....windowsxp... I assume the computer with the problem is running XP...)

Have you tried different USB sockets? I've had a camera that didn't get
detected properly when plugged into the front sockets but worked fine when
plugged into a rear socket. Can someone else explain why this should be so?
Thanks.

Lynn - Are you by chance running Windows Media Player hwen you plug in your
Camera?

This killed the Scanner And Camera Wizard for me when I Plugged in My
Camera.
Exiting WMP then it worked fine .

Any other USB devices installed recently?
I also have Canon camera and Canon's Zoombrowser software and installing
a Mustek scanner stopped the camera being recognised when plugged in.
Leaving the scanner unplugged seems to let the camera be installed, but
I have to start Zoombrowser manually now, it won't auto launch for some
reason.

Yes, the same cable (and camera) are used with all three systems, all
running XP Pro SP2.

The computer that it quit working on is my laptop, which only has rear USB
sockets...

No, I've tried it with no other software running.

Apologise for butting in, but I had the same problems on two PCs and Canon
cameras,
I bit the bullet and bought a USB card reader.
They are not expensive and you can travel/use them on any PC with a USB
connection.

I did not see the start of this thread but my guess is that it would have
stopped working after you installed XP SP2. I had the same problem with a
Sony DV camera as SP2 wiped out the specific Sony drivers I had installed
for my connection. I had to "fool" the system to get the old drivers
re-installed after SP2 and then the camera was recognised again when
connected.

Lynn,

You are one of hundreds if not thousands of users who have problems with SP2
and USB's - see USB connection issue after installing SP2 updates on this
board.

I have given up any hope of Microsoft owning up to this one in the short
term and ordered a PCMCIA card with 2 USB ports (hoping it will bypass the
problem).

Kind regards,

Try re-installing the software CD that came with it.

The Camera and Scanner Wizard should work without installing anything. Of
course I did reinstall the camera software and updates from the web, but it
did not solve the problem.

As part of troubleshooting I installed the WIA (Windows Image Acquisition)
driver from Canon. It causes big delays in IE and My Computer, so I've
disabled it in Component Services and Uninstalled it from Control Panel.
However, that doesn't really get rid of it--anyone know how to remove it
completely?

Also, is there any way to remove the Canon USB driver? Will removing the
inf and pnf files be sufficient? I'd like to see how the Microsoft driver
works (it is the one installed on the systems that are working...).

Same here. My DX4900 does this. So what? I can access the camera
through My Computer or Windows Explorere as it shows up as a
removeable hard drive.

I don't give a flip if it shows up in Scanners and Cameras. What's
the big deal?

The camera does not show up under My Computer or Windows Explorer on my
system. I have a feeling that it would all work (again) if I could get
completely rid of the Canon drivers, but I haven't figured out how to do
that...

DId this just happen after SP2 was installed? I suspect that the new
drivers in SP2 don't recognise your camera and you need to re-install the
older drivers again.

How do I re-install the older drivers again?
