Camera Detection & Wizards

I'm trying to help a friend with Adobe Elements 5. I have no experience with
this software, or a digital camera (this would be the first time for me to
connect a digital camera to my computer). I borrowed the camera and its
software disk in order to get the program and some images. Although my USB
ports are all working fine, when I connected the camera and turned it on (my
computer, a PC running WXP, was already on), nothing happened, although the
camera initially seem to indicate a connection to a PC was being set up. I
then used the software disk that came with the camera to load Elements 5,
expecting drivers, etc., as well (if they were missing). The program loaded,
but there was still no recognition of the camera when I attached it and
turned it on again. I then went in to the Control Panel, to Scanners and
Cameras, and discovered that there was no pre-set entry for the camera brand
and no icon for the camera that would allow me to see preferences. My
computer, a ThinkPad Z60t, may be slightly older than the issue of this
camera. However, I had anticipated, for me at least, that there might be a
wizard or two (at least from Microsoft), but nothing appeared on my computer.
The camera is a Leica 'C-Lux 2', with no additional operating settings for a
download (except directions in its booklet to plug in the camera to a PC,
which my friend does regularly, to download images).

So two questions:
1. Should I have expected a Microsoft Wizard (or Wizards) to show up on my
computer? A window (which I see often enough) to let me choose an action or
none? If so, can this sort of wizard be located on my computer somewhere and
be activated (if it is not already).
2. If anyone has had my sort of experience with any digital point-and-shoot,
and recognizes my problem, is there something that I'm doing (or not doing)?

I do not want Elements 5 as my 'default' viewer, if that is what has
happened. Indeed, I'd like to retain access to any pre-loaded or similar
program that exists or I might add. But I cannot find any settings for a
'default' viewer. Is it by chance Windows Media Player (used for digital
pictures)? Any advice about a 'default' viewer, or Elements 5 as the default,
is also appreciated.

Does the camera have a setting to enable the USB interface ? That is the
first thing I'd check.

User manual.
http://us.leica-camera.com/assets/file/download.php?filename=file_2560.pdf

Page 84 (PDF page number = 87) mentions

"set the camera to a mode other than printer mode"

where they show a printing icon, rather than the word "printer" as such.

The instructions in the manual, are consistent with the camera having USB mass
storage interface, in which case your WinXP USB mass storage built-in driver
should be working. The internal drive should show up as a drive letter. You'd
want your WinXP to be patched enough, to be able to nandle USB mass storage
devices. (I.e. If it works with other USB mass storage devices, it should
work with the camera.)

In terms of debugging tools, UVCView is a program originally provided
by Microsoft. They've removed it from their website. They also asked
web.archive.org to remove the copy they had made of the program. Now
we're left with private copies. The main benefit of this program
right now, would be whether there is any visible response in this
program, when the camera is plugged in.

USB Mass Storage is one of the standard classes defined by
usb.org . Microsoft has built-in support, which varies by OS.
The table at the bottom here, suggests what things are
supported. You'll notice on the Leica page, they included
a driver for Win98, and my guess is that Win98 doesn't have
enough standards based support, to get the pictures off the
camera. But with other OS versions, it should be more or less
plug and play.

generally speaking, you shoud get a popup dialog when attaching a digital
camera to your pc, (when the drivers have been installed) but if your camera
doesn't have any, then treat it like a removeable flash drive, and using
windows explorer you can view the device/pics and copy them over to your pc.
viewing them should be easy using a double click on the image name, once it's

Thanks for your reply. I expected some sort of pop-up response, but then
nothing happened (except that a window on the camera suggested that it might
be ready). After installing Elements 5.0, I wondered if there was now an
internal conflict because Elements had set up its own default, one that
prevented the process from happening normally, or other processes from being
selected. In any event, I would like to be able to select the program that is
used to import/download my images (WXP also seems to include a simplified
program?), but cannot find if that is possible, or where.
