Digital Camera puzzle

I recently had to do a repair install on XP Home. After reloading SP2, I
checked to see if my scanner and digital camera worked as before ... they
did.I then reinstalled all the updates and security patches from Windows
Update. Now, the scanner still works, but the camera will not dump the
pictures like before. In control panel, the Scanners and Cameras sees and
identifies the camera .. all the properties settings are the same, but when
I click "get pictures", nothing happens. When I open the Scanner&Camera
Wizard,it says it cannot detect a device. The camera also shows in device
manager,"working properly"! I can access the camera through explorer and get
the pictures, but before I had it set to automatically do that when I turned
the camera on (& plugged in of course).I've uninstalled/reinstalled the
camera several times, uninstalled/reinstalled all the usb drivers several
times, went to the Canon site and got the latest WIA driver and installed it
...... no difference. I've tried all the other usb ports also. All the other
usb devices work fine too.Since there was 40 something updates, there's no
telling which one it was,or if that was it, and the updates don't even show
in Add&Remove Software anyway! Any thoughts?

Hi:

I too have a Canon camera (Power Shot A80) and recently after not using it
for sometime I encountered a similar problem as you are citing. The answer
was very simple and one that I knew, but had forgotten. Change from the
"Shooting Mode" to the "Playback Mode" on the back of the camera and see if
this solves your problem. It did for me.

Please post back your results.

Right. There are plently of options on digital cameras for streaming and usb
connections. Be shure to check the cameras options menu before you connect it
as well. (I have a Sony cybershot with functions for R/F streaming video, usb
normal and usb video capture).

From My Computer, right click your camera device (with the camera plugged in
duh) and properties > autoplay (tab) and select your options there.

Applications add context menus to places like this, so without certain
software you might not get the option to 'copy' pictures automatically. That
software usually comes with the camera so check your manual.

I appreciate the responses, but look again at what I'm saying. I've been
using my Canon A80 for over a year with the Scanner&Camera Wizard, no
problems. Playback mode is the only way you can use that feature. None of
the camera or computer settings have changed! Everything worked fine until I
reloaded all the security updates and patches from MS. I've asked them about
it as well .. no response yet (they may want their $35 first!)

"When I open the Scanner&Camera Wizard,it says it cannot detect a device"

I read your question again to make sure I understood you the first time.
This is the case since you did a repair install of Win XP you (most likely)
wiped out your camera drivers in the system32 folder.
"In control panel, the Scanners and Cameras sees and identifies the camera .. all the properties settings are the same, but when I click "get pictures", nothing happens. When I open the Scanner&Camera Wizard,it says it cannot detect a device."

To reinstall your camera go to Start > control panel > scanners and cameras
Add Device > have disk. If you have the installation CD provided from
Cannon, use it, if not download the .exe from Cannon's website.

Thats the best I can offer other than to uninstall the update from
Add/Remove programs. Windows hotfixes and security updates aren't always all
they're cracked up to be. Turn off Auto-Update (allow notification without
downloading) Make it a habit to do manual installs and click the "more info "
link to read about the update before you install it. 1/5 of the time you
won't want it.
