Build new computer

As a novice I am getting help from my neighbour who
is computer literate. He recommends a ASUS P5QL
motherboard which has a 775 socket, but
he is not sure of what CPU cooler to buy so as to fit in
to this motherboard , with an intel
dual core 2 chip. Any suggestion is much appreciated.

What memory, hdd , grafix card and psu are you going to be using?

Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme £45.99 Plus a fan.

Zalman CNPS9700-NT nVidia Tritium £47.14 Already has a fan.

I have the Noctua with an extra 120mm fan, best cooler I've ever owned.

I also have the cooler wizkd's linked to. For the money it does an adequate job.

I would also recommend Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound at around 7 quid a tube. It works.

My neigbours' recommended shopping list is:
ASUS P5QL-E Motherboard
1 port express IDE control card
Suitable cooler
Intel Core 2 Duo E7400, 2.8GHz, 1066MHz
thermal compound
Midi Tower ATX 350w 20+4pin 8cm fan
Kingston SDRAM 1Gb 1066 - 4Nos- QVL recommended

I will be using the following from the old computer:
60Gb Hard disk
240Gb Hard disk
Sound card Audigy
LG DVD burner
CD reader
USB 2 High Speed card
I wonder if I should renew the internet card.

ASUS P5QL-E has 4 slots for SDRAMS for a specified maximum of 16GB.
For a DDR2-1066MHz capability, the QVL recommended sdram is only 1GB (maximum), meaning a total of 4GB one could go for.
Will there be any serious repercussions in using, say a 2GB in each slot, against this recommendation?

What's QVL recommended? That's a new one on me.

If the board can take 16Gb then 8Gb would be recognised.

Whether it would ever be used fully is open to question.

For what you say you will use the pc for I would stick with the Asus recomendation. 2 x 1GB of ram will do you fine you could always add an extra two sticks of ram if you ever need to.

I personally would get a better PSU, 350w of unknown manufacture is not a good cornerstone for a modern build. This should do you fine ,

I have the HX 520 and it is silent as in dead silent. They come with a five year guarantee aswell, oh and Corsair make some of the best memory in the world so thats a good indicator of the quality to expect.

Sorry ,copy/paste of this info from web was not successful. If googled thus
'P5QL-E motherboard QVL DDR2-1066MHz capability' one will see this list of
recommended memory.
I will take the suggestion and stick 2x1GB for the time being.
