you can contact gateway tech support and give them the "stop message".
you could also give us that information. maybe we can help you?

Alternatively, you could format the HD and re-install your software. If any of
the software is bootlegged, don't re-install it.

While that type of action can sometimes be necessary, in most
instances it is the equivalent of "capital punishment for jaywalking".

Post details of the exact text of the Stop Error message.

Do you have a Recovery Disk. If yes read page 7 and then Page 5 of the
link below.
http://support.gateway.com/s/Manuals/Desktops/8510497.pdf

At Step 3 press R. On the basis that it works and takes you to your
Desktop follow the instructions in the next link but disregarding the
bit about logging on as administrator. Select a System Restore for a
date before the error first occurred.

Print out this link for later use
http://bertk.mvps.org/

If pressing R at Step 3 does not work make sure you select Full System
Restore (with Backup) and not the other Destructive option.

Good luck.

It says: "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME"

Under Technical Information it says:
***Stop: 0x000000ED (0x80E9BE30, 0xc0000032, 0x00000000,0x00000000)

So what is the problem with that computer?

With parameter 2 value = 0xc0000032 the problem is with the hard drive
data structure.

You need to boot the computer to the Windows XP Recovery Console and
then run the following command:

CHKDSK C: /R

There are several ways to boot to the Recovery Console, depending on
your brand of computer, the hardware that it has, and the type of
Windows XP CD that you have.

If you have a Windows XP Installation CD (not a "System Recovery"
disk) then boot with that and choose the Repair (Recovery Console)
option from the opening menu.

If you have a Compaq computer then it has a boot menu option that
includes running the Recovery Console. Some other brands have this as
well - check the documentation or contact the manufacturer.

If your computer has a 3.5 inch diskette drive then you can download
the boot diskette images for your version of XP from
http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=310994 Create the diskettes and
boot the computer with them.

You can also create a Windows XP Bootable CD with Bart's PE Builder
from http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ and boot your computer with the CD
that creates.

Good luck

Is BartPE legal? Also, what will CHKDISK do?

I went to the BartPE website. I think I need a Windows XP installation CD to
use this. Is there any other way to run the recovery console? Or, can you
please clarify how to use BartPE?

I read the Microsoft explanation for the problem. I do not have a Windows XP
Installation Disc. Is there another way to run the recovery console? Is there
a file that I can download from Microsoft or somewhere else that enables me
to run the recovery console?

Look at page 41 and 42 of the Manual on the end of this link:
http://support.gateway.com/s/Manuals/Desktops/8511110.pdf

On the support site there are quite a number of manuals so this one may
not apply to your computer.

Do you have the operating system disc that came with computer? If yes go
for Full System Restore with Backup.

If your computer has a 3.5 inch diskette drive you can go to
http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=310994 and download the diskette
image files for your specific version of Windows.

This will create a set of 6 diskettes which you can use to boot your
computer to a Command Prompt from which you can run the Recovery
Console commands. The command you need to use in order to repair the
damaged data structure of your hard drive is:

CHKDSK C: /R

For information about CHKDSK and what it does see the following
article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

When was the machine purchased and where? Did you buy it new or second
hand? Do you have any documentation from when it was purchased new? I
assume it is out of warranty?

Examine the casing of the computer. On a machine I was given there is a
small sticker with G7 500 which I guess is the model and on the back is
the date of manufacture and serial number etc. My machine was made in
Ireland and sold in England. However, you need as much information as
you can get about the machine.

I think you are living in the United States. The link below contains
some numbers to call:

http://www.gateway.com/about/contac...upport&cm_cat=ContactUs&cm_pla=&cm_ite=CallUs

Looking at the Gateway site it is obvious that they want to sell paid
Technical Support for their products. Their is free support but it's
Online. If and when you telephone make sure you have all the information
you have about the machine to hand. Concentrate only on one question.
How and on what basis can you obtain replacements for lost disks?
Microsoft have a policy whereby they replace disks for less than full
price if they can verify an original was purchased and I would imagine
Gateway could well offer a similar service. If you decide to purchase
remember there is no guarantee it will solve your problem. If you are
not living in the United States you need to call a number covering the
area where you live.

Have you picked up that this is a Gateway, which has a restore partition
from which you can reboot if you have the right disks. Unfortunately Val
does not. The route I have been following with Val has reached the point
of ascertaining whether you can obtain Gateway disks on a basis similar
to that available from Microsoft where replacement disk are provided,
where the original disks have been damaged or lost for significantly
less than the full replacement cost.

Not understanding the Bart route I am not sure whether my pointing this
out helps or not but I just thought I would mention it.

Running the Gateway restore is likely to be a total "slash and burn"
operation, wiping out everything on the hard drive and restoring it to
the "factory fresh" condition with all user data files etc permanently
wiped out. Not a desirable option in my opinion, at least not until
all other avenues have been exhausted.

An Unmountable_Boot_Volume error with a status code (parameter 2)
value of 0xC0000032 specifically designates that the problem is with
the data structure on the hard drive and in at least 99 and 44/100% of
the instances of this specific condition running CHKDSK /R will fix
the problem, preserving everything intact.
