BSOD on first boot - how to find the stop code ?

M

Michel S.

Hello !

Installing XP-Home on a otherwise working computer (there is another
partition on the HDD which works well under XP-Home too. This partition
is currently "hidden and inactive" - no dual boot involved.

Just after XP finished to copy the required files and is making it's
first boot, there's a BSOD.

Unfortunately, this BSOD is viewable for a period too short to be read;
the screen comes black right after this and nothing but the reset
switch works.

Upon reboot, when the startup menu appears, I select the "safe mode" -
same result.

Using tools such as BartPE or UBCD4Win, is there a way I can access the
boot partition and find the stop code of this BSOD ?

Any ideas on what can be causing this ?

Thanks

Hello,

Select 'Start Windows Normally' and *quickly* hit F8.

If you got the timing right, you should see another menu. If there is only
one option in that menu, hit F8 again.

In this menu select 'disable automatic restart on system failure', Enter,
Enter and you should be able to view the full blue screen error.

Thanks - it worked. You're right in highlighting *quickly* ! ;-)

FYI, it worked, but only when I started in safe mode. Disabling the
autorestart before booting in normal mode did the same result as
before.

And now, I know I'm in trouble with a :

STOP c000021a {unrecoverable system error}
Session Manager Initialization stopped unexpectedly with status
0xc000263 (the exact message may differ - I'm translating from french)

Going back to Google...

Thanks again !

Thanks nass.

Using UBCD4Win, I checked the registry and found no "GINADLL" key.

Since it was the very first boot after installation, using "Last known
good configuration" wasn't an option.

Oddly enough, when I went to the next steps (in-place upgrade or
reinstall), the partition my system was installed on was not in the
proposed partition list to repair.

I resorted to delete the said partition, recreate it and perform a new
installation all is now running well. Go figure..

In the meantime I made burn tests on memory and disk, but nothing was
reported as an error..

Thanks again !
