BSOD - STOP ERROR CODE 0X024

Trish

Hi,
My friend has a Dell Dimension 3000 working on Windows XP. It was working
fine until about 3 weeks ago, when he turned it on it came up with the bsod
with stop error code 0x024.
I am not a computer expert but am quite good at following technical
information.

I have looked at so many threads on the web to try to solve the problem,
but most sites are telling me to enter information or go to programs.

This is where the problem is- I cant get into anything. Not even safe mode
or to last known good configuration. Everything just takes me back to the
bsod.
Please can someone help, it is now driving me mad.

Trish, does he have a WinXP or Win2K CD? If yes, go into the Bios
and set the cd/dvd drive as first boot device. Insert the CD and restart.
When it asks if you want to do a
Repair select Yes. It will take you to the Recovery Console and
ask for password. Forget that and type : chkdsk C: /p click Enter.
Restart when chkdsk is finished. Type:
exit to quit RC.

FYI MSDN page on error:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/ms793935.aspx

You need to use CHKDSK C: /R, see:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/.../proddocs/en-us/bootcons_chkdsk.mspx?mfr=true
.... /p does NOT fix problems, /r does.

Trish, Chkdsk C: /r is correct. /p only does the check /r
does check and repair.
/r

Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information. Implies /p.

The most likely cause of this error is a hardware failure in a disk or
disk controller. Try checking all the connections to the Hard disks.
I hope that this helps. :)

Same problem but.. cant recovery console blue screens too

Hey all,

Have the same problem with 0x024 error ntfs.sys blue screen. I have run the manufactures hd diagnostics, passed just fine. Windows repair first and second wont work, both blue screen when trying to access the HD from the cd. Tried ghost, it locks up when trying to mark the drive. Tried ubcd4 win, it bluescreens when accessing the files, tried hirems, same Erd commander, dos for ntfs, etc ... basically anything accessing the file structure blue screens.

Anyone know of a special trick or software that will allow me to access the files at least, if not a repair?

Was thinking of a linux boot disk but I have no idea what to do in linux or if it would work.

Found a diff fix

Ok, the computer I was working on, would not access the hd file structure in any way. 0x00000024 error NTFS.SYS

It would not allow you to run chkdsk because it would blue screen at the recovery console. It would also blue screen trying to do an overinstall. Obviously coult not boot to windows regular mode nor safe mode. Diagnostic disks would lock up or blue screen. Found a fix for it, after all my other tech buddies said it was a gonner. Thought I was going to have to use a linux disk but didn't have to.

If your computer contains only a single NTFS volume and no additional Windows 2000-based computers or hard disks are available to use for the previously described methods, you can boot from the four Setup disks to run the Chkdsk tool with the Ntfs.sys driver disabled. To repair a NTFS volume by using Recovery Console, use the following steps:

Start the computer by using a Microsoft Windows 95/98 startup disk with CD-ROM support (or from another computer with a CD-ROM drive, insert the Windows 2000 installation CD-ROM).
Change to the CD_ROM:\Support\Bootdisk folder, and then run Makeboot.exe or Makebt32.exe to create the four Windows 2000 Setup disks.

Using Notepad, modify the Txtsetup.sif file on the first Setup disk you created in step 2:

In the [FileSystems.Load] section, locate the line that begins with "ntfs.

Insert a semicolon (;) at the beginning of the line, as shown in the following example

[FileSystems.Load

fat = fastfat.sys
;ntfs = ntfs.sys
Save your changes

Start the computer that is experiencing the "stop 0x24" error message by using the four Setup disks. When the Welcome to Setup dialog box is displayed, press F10 to start Recovery Console.

Run the following command to repair the corrupted NTFS partition:

chkdsk driveletter: /r or /p
Type exit to quit Recovery Console, and then restart the computer.

BASICALLY, USE A 2000 STARTUP FLOPPY DISK SETUP, CHANGE THE FILE IN IT, AND BOOT UP OFF FLOPPY, FOLLOW DIRECTIONS AND WALLA!
