Browser closes automatically

I am having difficulty with my Internet Explorer 6.0
browser (XP)- I guess this is where the problem lies. We
are able to access all normal sites- such as MSN, Yahoo,
LandsEnd, etc., but when I try to access another shopping
site similar to Lands End either by typing in the address
or trying to access it from a search page, the browser
automatically closes just after connecting to the page,
and does not stay open long enough for me to even see the
actual page. It has just started doing this in the last 3
months- previously I was able to access and purchase
things from the website. I have searched the security
area under internet options, checked firewalls, etc. but
to no avail. The browser automatically closes just on
this particular shopping site and one other site (for
high school alumni).
We are at the end of our rope for ideas on how to fix
this- any ideas out there?
Thanks so much in advance.

Purge your browser's file cache.
Delete any cookie files for the problematic domain.
Run a FULL scan for viruses using a recently updated anti-virus product.
Use Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis, and CWShredder to check for spyware or
hijacking.
Temporarily DISABLE your firewall while connecting to the web site.

I have tried all of the listed suggestions below. I also
just tried accessing the sites through Netscape . . . and
the same thing happened. So, now I realize, perhaps this
is not a IE6 issue?
Thank you so much for your input and reply.
Any other suggestions out there?

Could be that web site uses meta refresh (you navigate to one page and
after a timeout, which could be 0 seconds, they move you to another
page). Could be they screwed up and reroute you to a page that doesn't
exist. You can disable META REFRESH option in the Internet security
zone to temporary eliminate that as a possibility. The web designer
*should* tell you to what page you get rerouted but that's not always
the case (so you have to right-click to look at the source to see where
the meta refresh takes you).

You don't mention the site for me or anyone else to go have a look. If
it is a Microsoft site, Microsoft is enamored with scripting. So try
disabling it in the Internet security zone, or list the site in the
Restricted Sites zone.

You didn't mention how you have cookie management configured in IE. I
have it set to: Allow 1st party cookies, Block 3rd party cookies, and
Allow per-session cookies. A site should never require a 3rd party
cookie to work, but it might, especially if it is a store site and they
manage it from another domain or want to track your navigation to sell
off that info. So you might have to use Edit for cookies (under the
Privacy tab) to list that domain and configure it as Always Allow
(assuming you trust them now).

Wow. Thank you so much for your reply. I'll follow your
advice, and see what happens. Will post results.
