Browser unexpectedly closing

Hello everybody. I am having problems with my browser closing on a certain
website but only when watching media through Quicktime! The website in
question is www.freetvonline.com.

The standard error message comes up saying the browser has encounterd a
problem and must close. The actual log is relating to this problem is a DLL
file jscript.dll. I have tried various solutions as I am well protected
running Antivirus Software and a Firewall. I also have installed Spybot
search and destroy & running Trend CWS Shredder. But there are no malicious
programmes detected. I reguarly empty my Temporary Internet folders and
Temporary files and I have even run my Antivirus software and Antispyware in
safemode to scan my system. I have even tried re-registering the offending
jscript.dll file in command prompt but to no avail.

My only conclusion to why this may only be happening on this particular
website is the site may be running a particular malicous script that is
causing my browser to crash. Could anyone throw any light on this situation?

Hi Rob,
Windows Version?

Why aren't you using Media Player?

I don't think the problem is from malicious code on the web site, just a
compatibility issue with your versions of Windows and Quiktime.

Hi Rob,
Thanks for your reply. I am using Windows Media Player 10 and my version of
Quicktime is 7.1. I don't have a problem if I stream media through Quicktime
on other sites but only on this particular website. As far as I know I don't
have a problem streaming media through windows player.

To answer your question Rob about why I am not using Windows Media Player is
simply because some of the links are Quicktime streams. While others are
Windows ones.

Is it worth me updating my script engine and if so how do I go about this?
As I said the jscript.dll seems to come up as the problem when the error
message appears when the browser closes.

Thanks,

Hi Rob,

I would be a bit aprehensive about updateing the jscript.dll, you should
have the latest version if you are up-to-date with windows updates.

I found this on the web

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm

which I would try if I had quick-time and IE.

I think the problem is on of compatibility between Quick-time and IE or if
the web site in question is using an embeded Quick-time ActiveX player, then
the issue would be recent changes to the way ActiveX controls are loaded in
IE.

I just visited freetvonline and I see that they are using embeded activex
controls. You will notice that when you pass the mouse over the embeded
media player on the homepage a message is displayed "Click to activate this
ActiveX control". I am suspicious that this is the cause and the solution is
for the web site to change the way they are embedding the quick time player
(MS has a workaround for web developers)

Hi Rob,
Sorry Rob, I am using Windows XP home and IE 6.

Thanks for replying. I wanted to say I have posted a similar message on
this discussion group "Browser plugIn problem." This is the error log that I
am getting when my browser closes with the standard Microsoft IE has
encountered a problem and must close.

Error Signature AppName:iexplorer.exe AppVer:6.0.2900.2180 ModName:
jscript.dll ModVer: 5.6.0.8831 Offset:000246c4

You say that the this particular website uses embeded active X and yes the
message "Click to activate this ActiveX control" does appear when I move my
mouse over the embeded player. I have noticed that when I a disable Windows
Media Player 10 from my add-ons in IE the problem goes away when watching
Quicktime streams. Could this be conflict related?

Just one question If I download the Quicktime Alternative 1.76 codec do I
have to uninstall my version of Quicktime 7.1? Or do the two work in unison?

Thanks Rob,

Kindest Regards,

Rob 1.
