How to close IE after specified period of time

I have a DSL connection to the internet. Quite often my wife and daughter
walk away from the computer after browsing the internet, etc. and leave the
browser open.

I have searched through IE6 to find a way to automatically close the browser
after a period of being idle. I would like for the browser to close after 30
minutes of non-use.

Is it possible to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Hi Ed,

You could try looking for shareware to do this, though I do not know of any
and as a programmer I would find this task challenging. Normally ppl would
use a screen saver to hide the screen after a period of inactivity.
Having a DSL connection does not mean that you are consuming any more
connection resources while your computer is idle (while your browser is open
your DSL modem is sending a packet to the server every second or so to let
it know that the connection is active.)

Regards.

Like Rob posted, there's really no harm done leaving IE open and just
sitting there. I don't know of any third-party program that would test IE's
inactivity and close it, but there are programs out there that can close IE
at a set time each day - like Intelligent Shutdown:

You can force a log-off of Windows after a certain amount of activity, too.
See this site for more information:

Or you can use a freeware program like Shutter:

After some Googling, I did run across a program that some have mentioned
will close a specified window after a set period of inactivity. It's called
WatchCat, but it's old and no longer supported.

Use at your own risk.

Thanks Rob and Jon for your responses. I will give them a look.

I guess that I am a little paranoid, but with all of the hackers, etc. out
there, I am a little worried that someone might "hack" into my computer, even
though I am running Windows XP Professional's firewall protection and
Samantec's Corporate Antivirus software.

Again,
Thanks

Leaving your browser open does not add to the risk. Closing your browser
does not reduce it.

Your IE is so much more dangerous while you're using it that I wouldn't
worry about it when it's idle.
