Broken Links

I'm redoing my website (new theme, navigation bar, etc) and, in the process,
created a subweb as a place to keep pages that will not have a theme. Pages
located in the main website area link to pages in the subweb and visa versa.
Now when I create a "Broken Link" report in either the main or subweb, I get
a lot links of "unknown" status. All of these links report "OK" when I
verify them.

Do I have problem here? The website seems to work fine on my desktop. Will
the problem reveal itself when I finally publish the revised website to the
server?

No you do not have a problem. Subwebs/Subsites are completely independent of the root web, and you
will need to make your link between the root and subs, absolute URLs. All images used in the subweb
need to also be in the subweb.

So links between webs and subwebs are like any external link such as a link
to www.microsoft.com and that is why they show up on the Broken Link report?
If my website on my hard drive is C:\website and my subweb is
C:\website\subweb, then a link from the subweb to the index page on the
website would be file:///c:/website/index.html and a link from the website
to page1.html in the subweb would be file:///c:/website/subweb/page1.html.
This is how the links look like when I create them in FP 2000.

When I publish to the server where my website is www.web.com, the links will
be converted to www.web.com/index.html and www.web.com/subweb/page1.html,
respectively. Is that correct?

You will have to create the link as they need to be, as FP can't manage absolute URLs.

Tom:

That's a bummer. Since the subweb hasn't been published yet, that means
that I won't be able to test many of the links until after the complete
website has been published. A lot of the documents on my website
(www.project2105.org) are records of public meetings that should not have
any formatting other than what was in the Word documents when I received
them which is why I've moved them to a subweb without a style or formatting.
I've converted the Word documents into html before I posted them.

Question: I've using the search function to allow searches of all the html
files. Since the html files will now be split between the website and the
subweb, will the search function still allow searches through all the html
documents?

Search: Only if hosted on Windows IIS with Index Server, the a catalog can be created that will also
index the subwebs.

When linking to pages and files in subwebs I use FrontPage to browse to the
file, and allow FP to set up the link. This usually ends as a relative link
when the page is saved, (but if I wrote in the same relative link myself, it
would break). The links still appear on the broken hyperlinks report as
Unknown, but they can be verified from there.

I took another look and found that all the links between the web and subweb
are indeed relative links so it looks like I'm in good shape. It test okay
on my desktop but I won't know for sure until I publish if.

FYI: If you make any change to page name or images in the root web, the links will not be updated in
the subweb.
