Broken active directory

Aaron Anderson

We've been noticing some problems with our Active Directory (single
domain, single DC) which leads me to believe that there is some
corruption in the AD. We have attempted to fix it but with no success
therefore we are considering setting up a new domain controller and
using ADMT to move data (users, groups, file perms) over to the new
DC/domain.

A couple questions regarding this.

1) Are we doing the right thing? Will the corruption be brought over
as well?

2) We would like to retain our current NETBIOS name for the domain.
We are renaming the FQDN for the domain. Is this possible? It would
seem that it is not since both domains must exist on the same network
at the same time for the migration to take place.

thanks in advance,

Aaron Anderson

What kind of problems are you having? This may be able to be fixed without
going through all that trouble.

You cannot keep the same netbios name for migration.

What are the specific problems you are noticing. A corrupt active
directory is usually a fatal problem.... so my first guess is you
probably don't have a corrupt active diretory.

You may want to add a DC to your current domain for redundancy. That
may be your best move until you find what the issue is. In a single
DC environment your disaster recovery options are severely limited.
