Britannica 2007, Reboots, Serious Error

D

Dougie Nisbet

I hadn't run Britannica 2007 for a while and when I tried it a couple of
hours ago the PC rebooted just as the main windows was displayed. On
reboot I got the message "The System has recovered from a serious
error". This was reproducible.

After a malware and virus scan I was still getting this, so I decided to
re-install Britannica 2007. This proceeds ok, but then about a third of
the way during the install while files are being written to the
harddrive, the reboot occurs again. Same as above. Reproducible.

I've had a think about what has changed since the last time I
successfully ran Britannica and it's tricky since it's been a while. I
keep up to date with Windows updates, but perhaps most significant is I
upgraded to IE7 last week. I don't run it much as I use Firefox and
perhaps I shall regret the rash of curiosity that spurred me to install IE7.

I'm deliberating whether to see if I can do a System Restore back to the
point before I installed IE7. Would that be worth trying?

On reboot I do not have an option to send a report to Microsoft. If I
request further information I get some technical info that means nothing
to me, although it saves a crash dump to a temp directory in Documents
and Settings. These files disappear when the error windows are closed.

A screenshot of these windows is at
http://nisbet.fotopic.net/p38419695.html and I did copy the dump files
out of the way before closing the windows so I do have them. As far as I
can tell this behaviour (the reboots) is only related to Britannica 2007
so I'm not sure how best to approach it, apart from copying this post to
their support. Perhaps an update that I've installed in the last month
of so conflicts with Britannica 2007? My gut feeling is that it's
happened around the time I did the IE7 upgrade.

You don't have to do a system restore to revert from IE7 to IE6, just go to
add/remove programs and remove IE7. I don't know if that will cause you any
problems or not.

I suggest running Filemon and having it log all file actions to a log file.
After the reboot, check the last lines of the log to see where it chokes.
It's a guide to get you started: http://www.leinss.com/fileregmon.html.

That's possible... but I'm running both here without problem.

You can uninstall IE7 via Control Panel/Add Remove Programs and your
system will revert to IE6.

Why not try uninstalling/reinstalling Britannica??

I can't see how to do this. I've had a look at the Help and the various
options but can't see how to grab the output to a logfile.

An update on this.

There appears to be a conflict with Britannica 2007 and F-PROT 6. I
upgraded to F-PROT6 about a month ago from F-PROT3. Britannica 2007 ran
fine with F-PROT3.
