Boycott Vista

Let me tell everyone here how strongly I feel about the EULA with Vista. My
wife is a system's administrator for 3 business locations. We are talking
aproximately 15,000 PCs under liscence from Microsoft with XP, under contract
from Dell. They are replaced every so often. This year when setting up the
contracts she has explicity ordered replacement PCs with XP. No VISTA, no
way, no how. Anything I can do to see that Microsoft VISTA will be BOYCOTTED
I will gladly do. Windows Millinium has more worth to me than this piece of
garbage.

You still need 4 licenses to operate copies of XP on 4 computers at the same
time. You cannot use 1 upgrade copy to update all four copies of XP.

That's true, however if I have 2 computers with XP (licensed) and retire one
computer, replacing it with a newer one, I can transfer that license over ad
infinitum without any problem. And I still have just 2 computers running XP.

Can I do this with Vista?

Personally, my computer is a home-brew, and I tinker with it --
constantly upgrading here and there, so I never wind up with an outdated
machine that I can't pay people to take off my hands.

MS's new policy will limit my ability to do this, which just doesn't
work for me. I was personally planning to buy Vista when it came out,
but unless they change that policy, those plans have just come to a
screeching halt. I'm not paying for the same freaking program, to run on
ONE machine, again and again -- nor am I going to go back to having to
stack old computers to the ceiling and buying completely new ones every
few years.

Personally, looks like I'll be sticking with XP, and learning Linux in
the meantime.

Me too.

Apparently you can only transfer Vista to either one new person or one new
machine.

Sounds like a plan...

So your situation represents the majority users of the "world"?

I still have one I8000 currently running as a final backup notebook, but it
doesn't mean that I don't have others.

You can do better than that.

The big shots on the corporate board have to pay their golf green's fee also. Your hard earned dollars do just that.
Here's a hypothetical, I have Vista installed on PC 1. I then upgrade my
computer, (M/B, CPU, HDD, and RAM) which makes it PC 2. PC 2 gets stolen. I
then build a replacement PC, which makes it PC 3. I still have a valid Vista
licence, but I'm not allowed to use it, I must buy another licence.

I suppose that seems fair, considering I am the wealthy individual that I
am.

I'm with Jon on this 100%!!! I buy an O/S and install it on my PC! No
matter how many times I re-install it, providing I am using it on ONE
COMPUTER AT A TIME, it's no ones business but mine! I was very keen to get
hold of the RTM, but with this stipulation in place; NO WAY! I would rather
stick with XP (for which I have 3 licensed copies of for the families 3
PC'S!). To top it all, with the price here in the UK set to be £325 for
Ultimate.... need I say more!

This money making racket is simply not going to work. No one's going to
part with an obscene $400 more than once unless they are plain stupid. MS
has opened a Pandora's Box, so to speak, and is going to be under fire very
soon- Just see when the launch date nears and the press get onto this
ridiculous stunt.

That term is not written on the OEM EULA. However, those terms are POSTED
ON MS WEBSITE AFTER THE FACT to SYSTEM BUILDERS AND OEMs. Not end-users.
MS Rewriting history already.

Unfortunately, I don't think the press will even notice (if none of us tell
them....), even less care......

It also doesn't say I am required to visit MS' site for any clarification.

False. From
http://news.com.com/Week+in+review+Vista+furor/2100-1083_3-6127838.html :

"Under changes to Microsoft's licensing terms, buyers of retail copies
of Vista will be able to transfer their software to a new machine only
once. If they want to move their software a second time, they will have
to buy a new copy of the operating system. In the past, those who bought
a retail copy of Windows needed to uninstall it before moving it to
another machine, but there was no limit to how many times this could be
done."

The XP EULA didn't say there was no limit.

The XP retail EULA does not say that. The retail version in effect allows
unlimited transfers provided the OS is only on one machine at a time.
Microsoft have never interpreted it as one transfer as I have replaced my
motherboard and other components many times over the last few years with no
problems over activation.

If they enforce it or not is separate from how
they interpret the EULA. You do know that with
Vista changing components is less likely to
"trigger" a re-activation than it was with XP?

According to the EULA, yes. What is not talked
about is whether Microsoft will enforce it, and
the answer is probably "no".
