Boy, did I stir up a hornet's nest!

I'm the one who posted, "Question about Vista" above. Yikes. It sure makes for interesting reading. However, one thing that I noted was that there was no mention at all about whether purchase of a Mac is a better choice. I realize that this is not a Mac forum, but I just bet that there's a whole other thread waiting to start on this one. Just so you know, advice I've received includes:
a.. Don't touch Vista
b.. Vista is just fine
c.. Wait for Windows 7
d.. If you think Win7 will work perfectly at release, you're not thinking right
e.. Run, don't walk, to the Apple store
f.. Go ahead, pay twice as much (or more) for a Mac
Why, oh why, did my other computer have to crash? I don't need this.

If you want a very nice, safe and secure computer, purchase a mid-range HP computer that
comes with Windows Vista Home Edition preinstalled. Do not listen to the trolls who advocate otherwise!

Personally I think you should build or purchase what you think is right for
your use. I built my pc with Vista business just before the beta release of
vista. I have been running it since then and nary a problem whatsoever! That
does not mean others do not have any problems but I have not. Vista I find
requires a lot of horsepower to cruise nicely. I have found the majority of
problems come from upgrading to Vista rather than doing a clean install with
new hardware. Also I personally believe if Mac's or Linux were that great
then these so called trolls would not be hanging out here now would they?
Vista is a lot more secure than xp ever was and as long as you are dilligent
in protecting your self than you will never have a problem. As long as you
choose the right drivers for your system you should also be fine. Do not use
"borderline" hardware as this will only cause problems! I am not necessarily
a "windows" fan but until something better comes along I will continue to
use it... Just my 3 cents

Chuckle.

that

Kinda hard to do considering that Windows Vista Home Edition doesn't
exist. Or did you mean Windows Home Basic? If so, another little chuckle.
Do not listen to the trolls who advocate otherwise!

Yeah, listen to Carey, who is sooooooooooo informed.

Nobody should purchase an HP computer. They are not very good quality and
HP loads tons of advertising on them. Poor choice for anyone to buy an HP
computer.

I agree very poor choice!

You never did mention this in your other post.

Define crash.

The term 'crash' is most often used for a s/w malfunction of some
type.....almost all of which can be resolved w/o having to buy a new
computer.

Many 'crashes' are a result of bad RAM, or faulty power supply, either of
which is *significantly* less expensive than buying a new system.

I'm on my third HP. Only problem was the first one that had Windows ME
installed. Once upgraded to XP, computer ran fine, although HP claimed
it wouldn't support the new operating system. Turned out they did
anyway. It's fairly easy to get the crapware off the machine.

Oh no! I actually agree with Spanky about something!

Technically speaking. Any OEM computer sucks because of crapware
preinstalled. The operating system has been screwed with and they always
include serious junk such as anything Norton or Macafee. You want more
dependability have someone at a local (small) shop build it if you do not
feel you can do it yourself!!

Didn't know that. My hard drive was going, going,.......If it booted far
enough (several times it didn't), I got the message "Back up your folders
and files immediately; your hard drive is failing" - or words to that
effect. I decided not to invest in another hard drive since the computer
(an HP, by the way - I've had three of them) was 5 years old. Who knows
what goes next?

Fair enough.....just thought I'd ask.

Typically, mechanical compononents are the ones that fail the most. HD's,
fans, and CD drives (well, floppies too, but using a floppy has become
uncommon with Gig size USB thumb drives for $15).

It may be worth it to invest $40 in a HD and use the machine as a second
machine, for whatever......(since you're already planning to spend
hundreds on a new system anyway, what's $40 ?)

The only problem with that is, it probably would cost twice as much, if done
by someone else, but otherwise a good suggestion.

You may wish to use the Windows Vista Forums, where mature posters can avoid the lame trolls:
