why did i buy vista...

So here are my specs first:
x6800
striker extreme
2 GB ram
2 8800 GTS
680w PS

So i had xp running smoothly with out a care in the world and along came
vista. Now granted i dont need vista but i like shiny things and i wanted to
have something to stab back the mac guys i know.
I bought the upgrade to ultimate to try and show my support for the OS.
So i did the upgrade and everything was running smoothly, had a couple of
restarts but those are normal when starting a new system. Finally got the
system up and running and decided to call it a night and shut down my system.
The next morning i turned on my system only to be greeted by "NTLDR is
missing". What the hell.... by looking this up online it could be any number
of things at this point, the equivlant of the doc saying i am sick but not
telling me what i got. So i just decided to redo everything. I went through a
couple of reinstalls figureing that vista wasnt likeing some of the things i
was installing ( teamspeak, trillian, BF2, xifre, ect...) I decided to go
with a clean install of vista this time and got everything up and running and
it needed to restart so at this point i havent install any new programs and
when it restarts it gets five min in to the program (havent opened any
programs yet...just looking at the background) and it freezes now, everytime.
Now i am no extreme tech guru but come on how can these guys legally get
away with selling a busted product. I might as well go down to the car
dealership and buy a car with only 3 tires. I have tried the vista reporting
but since it freezes up where it does there is no reports of any error. This
sucks, If microsofts plan was to drive more people to the Mac or opensource
then thier plan is working flawlessly. Why oh why did i buy this piece of
monkey crap called vista....

takes a bit of work to get it up and running.

After the clean install did you update your drivers from manufacturers
websites or use Windows Update? You may find newer drivers are available
which may help solve the problems you're seeing.

There were known issues with the 8800 drivers...make sure you get the latest
from nVidia. I'd even pull one of those cards out until you get it
running...

NVidia is having a problem with drivers especially 8800 cards and SLI. Try
pulling one of the cards until Vista is installed and running with the
latest NVidia drivers. At that point try reinstalling the second card.

From the system specs it looks like you may be a gamer. At this point in
time, mostly because of drivers, I would recommend XP over Vista for games.
You haven't wasted your money though. Because of Directx 10 Vista will
become the platform of choice for games. It will take a while for driver
support and game developers to catch up. When it does Vista will be the
platform of choice and you can switch to Vista.

Nice system. :) Your problem might be with the SLI NVIDIA cards. NVIDIA
drivers are still somewhat troublesome, especially in SLI. You might try
removing one of the cards to install Vista, install the NVIDIA drivers and
reinstall the second card.

If that doesn't work, make sure you have all your motherboard drivers
installed (latest, of course). Vista can work great, but depending on the
hardware, it can be a pain to get it up and running.

I finally went out and bought an ATI graphics card and upgraded myself to
512 mb. I figured my former Nvidia GeForce 7300 LE
card was somehow still causing problems even after installing the Vista
driver updates for it.

The rep at Best Buy said getting the ATI could be a misguided purchase and
that Nvidia was fine for Vista, but you know what?

Vista works great for me now,....Frank

D

Dustin Harper

Yea. NVIDIA makes some great cards, and at this point in time, the fastest.
But, their drivers for Vista make me sad. I usually don't have much brand
loyalty with computers, and will buy the fastest components for the best
value. NVIDIA has some great options, but if it won't work, I won't buy. I
use Vista, and until they can get their drivers working, they are losing
sales. Fastest cards or not.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to buy another DX9 ATI video card (upgrading to
PCI-E) instead of NVIDIA. Of course, it will be <$100 until a good DX10 card
is available.

I did just have a thought: what if it isn't NVIDIA's driver problem at all?
What if it is DX10 hardware causing issues. Perhaps that is why ATI is so
late at releasing their DX10 hardware... Hmmmm.... Conspiracy theory
#1039239 in the ongoing Vista saga. :)

"NTLDR is missing" means you foolishly left a non-bootable disk in
either your USB, DVD, or floppy drive when you rebooted. It means
"can't find an OS to boot with". Remove the non-system disk, or
change the boot order in your BIOS.

That error has been around since at least W2K; I'm amazed that anyone
wouldn't know that. "Liking shiny things" is just not enough of a
qualification to install an OS on your own. Wherever did you get the
notion that Windows was easy to install? I just spent 8 hours this
weekend installing Vista on a clean PC (long story, involving W2K w/o
SP4, RAID drives, no floppy drive, and the vista key was only
upgrade). Have you considered all the shiny things that Apple has to
offer?

"I went to change the oil in my car, since I like dirty things, but
after knocking the drainplug out with a mallet, I couldn't put it back
in when I was done! Why doesn't Ford put a sticker next to the
drainplug that says "Use wrench to remove drainplug!"?"

People like you are why the first 45 pages of a 50-page user manual
consists of all the harmful things one could possibly do using the
product...and warnings not to do them.

A cards only as good as the drivers........I am starting to regret
gettign an Nvidia card in this new machine instead of sticking with
ATI after so many years. My ATI 9700 video card and ATI drivers work
wonderfull in my 3 year old machine with Vista. In my experience ATI
drivers have always been solid.

Now don't get me wrong this Nvidia card is awesome in my new machine
just seems the company is lacking the drive to deliver drivers. The
only real issue I have is with certain PC games that were not designed
for Vista causing Aero to turn off. But I do understand these games
were not meant to run under Vista so I can deal with changing out Aero
when I want to play them.

See if you need to update your BIOS!!!!!! Many many users have had issues
and updating the bios has taken care of them. Also make sure you have Vista
drivers for all of you hardware. On a side note, Vista is not 'busted', I
run it on two PC's and it runs awesome. Sure there are a few small issues,
but nothing would not expect from any new OS. XP had issues when it came
out, actually I had more issues with XP's release than Vista's.
So update your bios (it is an ASUS mobo you have, and they have REALLY
REALLY slacked off on making Vista driver for it, which is very
disappointing because I also build with ASUS mobo's. You may not be able to
use the mobo you have until ASUS releases drivers for it. I had the same
issue, but luckily I was able to go to the manufacturer of the actual
parts/hardware on the mobo and get drivers. But there was no help from ASUS
on that one.)
Wish ya luck man.

By the way i also have the 8800 as well on my game pc, and when I got Vista
I also got the beta drivers for the 8800. They worked great, only bug I had
with the 8800 drivers was some garbage on a window when it was opened or
closed, it would last only for a blink of an eye though.
And actually, I run all my video games on the Vista PC now, and they run
very well, in fact most games have better frames. Vista uses multiple cores
much more efficiently.

yeah i agree that post was a little rude, sounds like adam albright.

My Vista install experience went very well, I started both my pc's from a
clean install, took about an hour.
Vista is working great for me, I use one of my pc's as a software
development machine for direct x. dot net, C++ etc. No issues with that
either. It seems the key to a successful Vista install is getting all the
hardware drivers BEFORE you install Vista. As far as the nvidia 8800, I like
it, and it works well for me. I would seriously consider that it maybe a
bios issue (upgrade your bios) or not having vista drivers for mobo
components.

i would like to correct my post
I meant to say (asus has slacked off making vista drivers for their
motherboard's. I am not sure about your mobo, the striker extreme, it is one
of their newer board, so I would hope they have vista drivers and a
compatible bios for Vista).

Darryl,

Your rudeness and crassness is neither appreciated nor desired. Did
your parents raise you to be this way or did you learn this reprehensible
behavior all by yourself? I don't know if you have any children, but if you
do, are you teaching them this behavior also? If so, you are not a very
responsible parent. Psgod had a legitimate question and he came to this forum
for an answer, not a smart-ass reply from someone who does not know how to
politely interact with other people. I did not know the answer to his
question, which is why I frequently read these columns.
Therefore, I assume you consider me some kind of moronic fool.
Thank you very much for the classification.

Here we go again. Why can't we have a little civility in these postings?
This is just another example that age has nothing to do with maturity. I am
not defending Mr. Albright's postings in any way. However, I had a question
concerning WMP and Mr. Albright provided me with a solution to my problem. I
appreciate his desire to help other people. Name calling and inuendo are not
necessary in these forums.

you are correct that vista was made by monkeys.

It seems that the only guys who actually like it (not only use it because it
came with their computer, but you know.. the vista fans), have more monkey
dna than normal....

Just so you know there is less than a 1% difference between monkey and human
