Question about Vista

F

Fred

Is Vista really the horrible OS that I'm hearing about? All I hear is, "Stay away from Vista." I love XP, but you can't get it easily any more. I'm about ready to buy a MAC from what I'm hearing about the freezes, crashes, etc. of Vista. True or False?

Yes.

All I hear is, "Stay away from Vista."

I hear that a lot too.
I love XP, but you can't get it easily any more.

Try www.newegg.com.
I'm about ready to buy a MAC from what I'm hearing about the freezes, crashes, etc. of Vista.

Stick with XP and let's see what Windows 7 is like when it comes out
later this year or early next year. Even Microsoft has admitted Vista is
no good.

If you buy the latest top of the line PC with about 10GB RAM and get a Microsoft Certified Professional to install Vista for you and maintain your PC on a regular basis, I would recommend Vista.

If not, do yourself a big favor and just go out and buy a Mac.

You can get many PCs and laptops with XP installed and also a copy of Vista included if you wish to be a masochist.

Vista has too many user annoyances and only a very few obvious improvements.
Basically, MS is trying to suck money with incremental changes to get improvements out.
We will never get a good OS, because if we do, we will never upgrade. Fact!

Vista has the following impediments, among many others
UAC - protects you from yourself more than anything else and adds more "do you really want to do this ..."
Some app need to be "Run As Administrator" or they won't/
Some apps need to be run in XP compatibility mode or they won't run.
Aero is too noisy. Try reading a window caption. Very difficult.
Captions are transparent which is really visual noise. useless.
You are no longer the admin of your PC, even though you are the only user and the owner of the PC.
You have to find a way to become superuser by asking for help. Very poor.
Then Vista nags you that you are doing what you really need.
Vista is still ergonomically poor, it is inconsistent from Windows itself to Office applications.
e.g. mouse scrollwheel works correctly in Windows Mail or Outlook etc but not in Windows Explorer.
why is this, because MS has absolutely no quality control that is user oriented.

There is a lot more, but that is enough for now.
Sad, isn't it!

False.

The first released version of vista was truly awful.
Vista with the service packs and updates is now very stable and quite
nicely behaved on all the systems I have used.

BUT, If you're going to cough up the hard earned, it's probably best to
wait for Windows 7 which is much nicer. ;-)

On new hardware I'd go with Windows 7 - the beta works well for me.

As for a Mac - if you have the money, very nice.
Mac OSX is immune to 99% of the malware, trojans, viruses out there.
Macs are expensive and a pain to get fixed.
I have a shiny new Macbook Pro (bought by employer) with Bootcamp; this
has WinXP, Vista, Win7 beta, OSX and Open Suse 11 KDE.
Handy for application compatability testing...

I have Vista HP pre-installed on 4Gb + 2 core and 3Gb + 4 core machines.
No problems, it's fast and stable. Networking no trouble, includes NAS
and router and previously with XP and W98. One PC runs in Classic mode
( I always have since W95 )and the other full Aero with no detectable
difference in response.

You will get every answer from superb to diabolical but bear in mind few
people who use it without problems will be using this group.

I absolutely love Windows Vista! It is a vast improvement over Windows
XP and I have had no major issues with it. I've been using it since
January 2006 and the implementation of Service Pack 1 really makes this
a rock-solid operating system.

I heartily recommend Vista!

Just curious, what do you think is the "great improvement over Windows
XP"? Slower file transfer? The need to upgrade hardware? The infamous UAC?

Aren't you the one who has to power down the PC, unplug the PC, say prayers over the PC, take the PC for a walk outside to get your PC to do what you want? You have no business using Vista. Vista is way over your head. You need Ubuntu. Speak with Alias our Ubuntu Marketing Department and he will help your sorry ass out.

Chuckle. Finally admitting that Ubuntu is more user friendly than Vista,
eh? It's about time.

Oh, and enjoy:

Yes Ubuntu is great for the users who can't figure out Vista. That includes
Alias and his idiot side kick ray. Remember, Ubuntu is FREE and NOBODY
wants it. Imagine, a FREE OS that NOBODY wants. That should tell you all
you need to know about that crappy product.

It's great for more than that. I have installed both Vista and Windows 7
and, trust me, it's no big deal. I kinda like Win 7 and may very well
buy it when it comes out. Yaknow, for gaming as Windows is pretty good
at that and Ubuntu is not. This isn't because Ubuntu couldn't be good at
video games; it's because the video game makers don't port it to Linux.

You lie, why?

I don't make a habit of responding to ignorant trolls, such as yourself.
I have had no problems with "slow file transfers" or anything else you
mentioned and your opinion is 100% inaccurate. I would not trade Windows
Vista for any other O/S on the market today! Windows Vista works, and
works extremely well!

Well, TROLL, others have the same feeling about YOU.

You are lost in the Vista group and you should be in the Ubuntu group.
Oops - You don't know how to help people with Ubuntu. Then maybe you
should migrate to the alt.sheepfuckers.org

So you haven't read the hundreds of others posted about you over the last
couple of years? HA HA HA HA- Can't remember shit for more than a day?
Typical for a major stoner like yourself.

You are also the one who can't remember that I had a SUCCESSFUL install of
Ubuntu.

So people who spent hard earned money on Vista don't like anyone
suggesting anything else. Big ****ing deal. My messages aren't for them
but for people who want a "change we can believe in", not the old status
quo.
You are also the one who can't remember that I had a SUCCESSFUL install of
Ubuntu.

You haven't installed Ibex, which is much better than the previous
distros. Unlike Windows, Ubuntu gets better with every new distro. Also,
if your install were indeed successful, you would know that Ubuntu can
be used for a lot of things but you say it isn't useful for anything.
Ergo, you're lying again.

UAC itself a fine idea and long overdue in MS's OS.
Running default as an Admin is a big help to malware. ;-)

The problem was the lame implementation; way too intrusive.
SP1 made things less annoying.

Windows 7 shows some thought and is nice to use.

Ur just another fan boy. Vistas sucks. Less features, less
performance, more bugs, more incompatibilities.

To the OP: Stick with XP if at all possible.
