Is it just me or is Vista looking a lot like a Mac?

Vista is finally out. Woohoo......Wait, this is what they've been bragging
about? They seem to be trying to look a lot like a Mac these days. They've
spent all this time just trying to catch up to Apple's standards, and now
Apple has just been sitting and watching and is gonna put something out that
is gonna blow vista out of the water. Apple just has the better operating
systems and is more appealing. The only thing microsoft has going for it is
that much of the older population knows only microsoft's operating system,
and they aren't going to want to take the time to learn a new system.

It's just you. The Vista GUI looks nothing like the OSX GUI.

In fact I give it no longer then a month before someone comes out with a OSX
theme for Vista.

Nope, the next version looks exactly the same. The GUI will not blow
anything out of the water.

No. I have to argue with that: Commodore 64 has the better operating system.
:)

It's all a matter of preference and usage. Some people in the science
industry wouldn't touch Windows or a Mac with a 10 foot ethernet cable. :)
They won't even run Linux. They will only run Berkley Unix. Does that make
it a better OS? Not for me. Can't play games on it.

Does the Mac have DirectX 10? Nope. Not a better OS.
Does Windows have (not too great at the whole Mac is better thing, so help
me out!) a better desktop publishing than a Mac? Probably not. Mac has it's
place, but it's a limited place. Windows seems to cater to a wider group of
people than Mac or Linux. It's an all purpose OS. Does that make it better?
No.

Don't know. I have never used a Mac and likely never will - so it is of no
concern to me.

Windows and OSX are after two distinctly different clients.

Windows is after the right brained "Damn the Torpedos" people., Apple is
after the left brain "Lets be creative about this" people.

There are far more right brained people in this world than left brained
people.

Point is, no one thing is right for everyone. The best one is the one that
works for you.

Ideas? Or looks? The OP said "looking" ;p

I love the calendar one. A calendar looks like a calendar! What the heck
do they want it to look like? A bannana? Hehehe.

If your favorite wine was a Cabernet, and someone said, wow, thats a lot
like the "two buck chuck" i got a trader joes, would you snub it?
OSX is a great operating system, a *proven* operating system, that Windows
Vista has emulated a lot of the features of.

R

Richard Urban

I am not snubbing it. I don't own a Mac and I know of no one (not noone) who
does. I see no reason to try to track one down just so I can say "I used a
Mac".

Idiot, MS WROTE the official version of UNIX on Intel. The first OS they
sold was UNIX. Until NT was developed all employees used UNIX. MS dumped
your OS, they stopped selling it, stopped using it, and stopped writing Dos
and Windows on it (although the audio system was written in a UNIX text
editor - unknown if running in Windows UNIX sub system or ported to the Win
APIs).

Take the hint Bill Gates et al are UNIX geniuses. But they rejected your toy
for a more modern OS. Apple had a more modern OS but theirs was crap which
is why they downgraded.

Yup! As well, Apple has emulated a lot of the PC world as well. Hell,
they're now a PC!

They should learn from each other EVEN MORE!

It's just you, I guess.
1) Vista is NOT a "machine" it is an OPERATING SYSTEM.
2) A "MAC" is NOT an Operating system, it is a slang word which defines a
SPECIFIC machine (an Apple Macintosh PC), which comes with a SPECIFIC Operating
System (the Apple Macintosh Operating System, or "MAC OS X").

So no, Vista is NOT "looking like a Mac".

By the way, it is not only the "older population" which uses Windows, it is the
MAJORITY of the population in general know.

And by the way AGAIN, the "younger population" aren't the ONLY ones who "aren't
going to take the time to learn a new system". The MAJORITY of Macintosh users
have NEVER known ANY OTHER OS than the Macintosh OS, nor do they want to learn a
new system.

We in the "older population" are perfectly capable of "learning a new system",
thank you very much... After all, WHO taught you how to comb your hair? or
drive a car? or turn the TV on, or use a toaster? or take a crap? or what your
little pee-pee was for? or not to crap in your pants?.

You probably never learned ANY of the basics of being a human being, did you?
You should have listened to the "older population" instead of playing those
idiotic video games.

Fraking idiot!!!

Really? So they didn't use Windows 1, 2, or 3? Or Win9x???? Damn.
They pawned that off on their customers but didn't use it themselves....
Doesn't say much for the faith they had in their own product, does it...
MS dumped
your OS, they stopped selling it, stopped using it,

AFAIK they still use it in their critical areas - the firewalls for
microsoft.com run linux and all of hotmail runs on solaris and bsd.
(used to be that you could ID microsoft.com and it would come back as
IIS running on some *nix variant....)
and stopped writing
Dos and Windows on it (although the audio system was written in a UNIX
text editor - unknown if running in Windows UNIX sub system or ported to
the Win APIs).

???? Really? Got any proof of any of that?

LOL....

Check out Beryl v. Aero and tell me which is more modern. Can Vista do
multi-user? Remote Sessions? (Not Rdesktop, which, AFAICT is nothing
but VNC repackaged, and VNC has been around the *nix for what, 10 years....)

More popular, yes. Better marketed, yes. More eye candy, yes. Better
and "embrace, extend, extinguish?" Definitely.

Except KDE? or DOS? or the Commodore 128 OS? Or the interface of a
Timex-Sinclair ZX-81?

Heck, man, even the Amiga OS desktop looks better than OS X.

Why would any sane person want their beautiful Vista desktop to look like the
crappy desktop of OS X?.

I sold my Apple Intel PC just to get rid of that p.o.s-OS, and bought a Dell
(yes, a Dell) to replace it, after using OS X for over a year exclusively.
By the way, the LAST few months I owned it, I WIPED the HD and put XP on it as
the exclusive OS. It was a passable machine, then. After all, the best part
of an Apple is the hardware, not the software. It's too bad that Apple won't
sell their machines without an OS on them, so we wouldn't have to waste our
valuable time by cleaning it off before we install Windows on it.

At least PC users have WindowBlinds if we don't like the stock GUI of XP or
Vista. All OS X users have (and actually NEED, their GUI is so crappy) is
Unsanity's "theme installer" (I forgot what it's called already, I was so glad
to get rid of that asinine OS and its equally-asinine software) -- oh, yeah,
"ShapeShifter" (what it "reshapes", I have no idea -- OS X always looked
exactly the same after installing one of its available "themes").

I guarantee you, I will NEVER put an OS X "theme" (or OS X, if Apple ever
"allows" it to be installed on NORMAL PCs) on MY computer. It will only lower
its value.

Personal preference. I happen to like the Vista theme. I wont change it
either.

No.

Nor does it make it any worse.

As they say, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".
I personally "beheld" the OS X desktop exclusively for over a year, and came
BACK to Windows. From which I SINCERELY PROMISE never to depart again.

By the way, this particular thread is more about the relative merits of the
Vista GUI versus the relative merits of the OS X GUI, not the two OSes in
general.

Actually, the FIRST OS Microsoft ever sold was "MS DOS 1.0". Xenix was added
later. It was obviously more of an experiment than a "sound business venture",
since, as far as I know, they no longer sell or support it.

Take the hint Bill Gates et al are UNIX geniuses. But they rejected your toy

It seems to me, then, that "right-brained" folks are definitely
counter-evolutionary in nature. So actually, OS X would be a STEP BACK in the
Evolutionary process. Because of that, it will soon (at least on the
Evolutionary time scale) disappear from the Human Race.

This young buck is a little biased against older folks, it seems to me, and his
post actually has NOTHING to do with the relative merits of OSes.

He's just here to troll for Apple, which he evidently knows NOTHING about. He
surely doen't know the difference between an Apple Macintosh ("Mac") PC and its
Operating System (the "Apple Macintosh OS", or "Apple Macintosh OS X", as it's
currently called).

Of course, this shows the same general lack of understanding of the English
language, computers, and life as it appears on this planet, which all "Mac"
users apparently have.

Hey, stud: I guess you aren't aware that MANY "Mac" users have never used ANY
OTHER OS than the "Macintosh Operating System", many of whom are FAR older than
you appear to be. And they have all been programmed by Apple as the good
little cultists they are to hate anything (or anyone) else but "the Macintosh
PC" and "the Macintosh PC Operating System" users.

Fraking cultists!!
