IS ITUNES OR IPODS COMPATIBLE WITH VISTA?????????

I just purchased a new computer and the operating system is Vista Home
Premium. The store clerk said "Do not download anything until you can
confirm that you have loaded the most recent driver for that product." I
can't find a recent driver available for Itunes or Apple Ipods, so I don't
know what to do.

I can't seem to get a good answer on this one! One place sends me to Apple,
the other sends me to Microsoft - can anyone help????

Hi Kisenhour--

The store clerk didn't give you much in the way of reliatble info. I won't
send you to Cupertiono or their Canadian PSS for Ipod, and I won't send you
to (yeow) Redmond. Redmond is pushing something that will be working in a
few years called a Zune anyway. They even have Zune teams with their own
digs.

Download the latest Itunes and their was a new update for Quick Time this
week which should automatically install.

While Apple plans to update Itunes with some Vista adaptation, many
people have no problem with it. Once you download Itunes, if you do, then
many Apple Ipod experts advise (plugging your Nano into your PC) to
*manually set the Nano to "disk," and simply change the drive letter of the
Nano to one far away from your other drive letters--say to X.

Apple's official statement on Vista is here:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305042

MSFT has an update for the infrequent problem that disconnecting the Ipod
from a Windows box can corrupt the ipods' tunes so Download and Use it:

An Apple iPod may be corrupted when you eject it by using the "Safely Remove
Hardware" feature or by using Windows Explorer in Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933824/

I haven't had any trouble with an IPOD on Vista builds for nearly a year.If
you set your Ipod the way I said above (manually) you simply have to
highlight the tune downloaded or ripped to Itunes and drag it to your Ipod's
listing when you plug it in on the left pane of Itunes and it will transfer
to your Ipod/Nano/Shuffle.

Good luck,

CH

Hi,
I'm dealing with that now as well. Don't hold me to this, but for myself, I
seem to have installed the I-Tunes Program in Vista Home Premium Ok I think
(not the Ipod yet, just the I-Tunes Software Program) and there's a safe way
to do this I think....

I Disabled the User Account Control (see 'User Accounts' in the Control
Panel and uncheck the box that enables this) before downloading (save to
your desktop) and installing the software. Also after I downloaded the
software (but before the install), I disabled my Anti-Virus Program and my
Spyware program and then installed I-Tunes. Of course I turned all my
protective programs back on after the install and also the User Account
Control.

So far the program is running well, but I have yet to hook up my Ipod to
Vista . So that will be the real test I imagine.

I hope I've helped. Good Luck ! Frank

Hi Frank--

If these things seem to help you, I'm glad your Ipod is working but I've
never had to disable UAC, my AV on Vista which is Win One Care, and I
haven't had any problem installing Itunes and its' updates. I haven't read
any information on the web or from Apple that would indicate that AV
interferes with Itunes in any way.

I do know a lot of people who will instruct to disable AV when installing
MSFT Office in case it detects some of Office's files as malicious, but not
Itunes. As my link above says, there will be some modifications to make
them more compatible, but I think the odds are far and away you'll be able
to use it just fine.

I would encourage you to use your Ipod on Vista--in my experience very few
people are having problems and a lot of people I know use Ipods on Vista.

You might want to look at my previous post with some tips for helping it
work, but I wouldn't expect you to have any problems and would encourage you
to try it as soon as convenient.

Yes, Chad, if memory serves, I too was able to use my Ipod fine on one of my
previous Vista installs.

All I'm doing is taking a better-safe-than-sorry approach, and while I agree
Apple may be different, it's in no way an unknown safe-guard when installing
software
that performs audio downloading and/or recording to disable the AV during
the install.

That is basic audio/PC procedure and I have always been instructed to do
this when installing more complex audio recording programs like Sonar.
Nero suggests it as well.

But it wouldn't surprise me if this does not apply to Apple, since they've
always been a little ahead of PCs in this department.

Once I went to Apple and DLoaded both I-Tunes v7.1.1.5 AND my 30gb video
IPODs new Software (V 1.2.1) all well. Before that, I had a bit of
compatablility problem, but now, all sweet.
