Botched Windows XP Update - Windows Freezes on Startup

Please Help - My PC powered off during the installation of a Windows XP Home
update, I'm not sure which one. Now Windows partially loads then freezes.
When I try to repair Windows using the recovery console, my administrator
account password doesn't work. Microsoft describes the problem in KB article
308402. When I go to the Microsoft support email/chat web page, I can't log
my problem because I am unable to access my product identification number,
because the PC won't boot. Thanks.

Hi,

You can bypass the sysprep problem using the boot disk set.

Using the WinXP Boot floppy set:

What were you thinking of doing once you reached that stage? I would
probably shoot for the "safe mode with command prompt" and run the
rstrui.exe file in the \windows\system32\restore folder instead.

I'm in a bind there, as well. I didn't get a floppy drive with the laptop.
Can I create the startup disks to run from a CD? Thanks.

Hi,

No, but if you get a USB floppy, most laptops will support booting from one.
