Windows update causing freezing

Hi

I've just been setting up a new computer with Office 2007 and Windows XP
however, once I ran Microsoft Update and installed all the critical updates
the computer started freezing.

The computer will start up, allow me to login and then after 2 or 3 minutes
the desktop stops responding and then the mouse stops working. I have managed
to resolve the issue by using System Restore to reverse the updates however,
this is obvisouly far from ideal.

Has anyone experienced similar problems or even better know which update may
be the cause.

What sp level is the current winxp?
I assume you installed hardware manufacturers specfic drivers first and
didnt rely on the default winxp drivers?

In IE run MS Update; when it finds resulting critiacal updates - and not
other updates - install say 6, then reboot the pc
If all good repeat the procees for the next 6, and so on

each system is different, install each update one at a time and watch your
system for problems, until you have found the culprit

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3) when posting to
this newsgroup.

NEVER use System Restore to "undo" updates (unless everything else fails)!
Uninstall the update(s) instead.

I had a similar problem a few years ago when upgrading Windows XP to SP2.
About two minutes after logging in, the system would stop responding to the
keyboard, normal service being restored after about ten or more minutes.
Since switching off "Automatic Updates", the problem has not recurred. To
compensate, I visit "Windows Update" once a week.
