I am Booting up Windows 2000 Professional - all is well
until after I enter my user name and password. The
system says its "loading my personal settings" when it
quickly switches to a blue screen with some error message
that dissapears too quickly to read and then reverts to
the IBM ThinkPad screen.

Any way to slow the error screen so I can read it?

This typically happens when hard disks are changed. Before you
change disks, delete any inappropriate or non-existing devices
as per Step 2 below.
1. From DOS or via a network connection, copy userinit.exe to
all the other hard drives. This should allow you to log in.
2. HKLM/SYSTEM/MountedDevices/:
delete all keys which look like "\DosDevice\<DRIVE_LETTER>:"
3. Point HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/Current Version/
Winlogon/Userinit to the correct location of userinit.exe

I have similar symptoms
(1) A Windows 2000 Prof. system that was working fine. No changes were made
(2) Boot proceeds normally up to approx. the point where I would expect a log-in screen
(3) Instead a blue background error message flashes, too briefly to read. If I were persistent enough, I might be able to photograph it. There is some numerical code near the beginning and I think I've seen the word "corrupt" further down
(4) Computer then reboots, repeating the process indefinitely if not stopped
(5) Booting from W2000 CD and choosing repair gives Recovery Console and Emergency Repair options
(6) Emergency Repair option does not recognize existing installation (I could not find any Emergency Repair floppy, besides, the floppy drive on this notebook seems defunct, has been for some time)
(7) Recovery Console allows access to all files. Oddly, there is no password required
(8) I was able to copy certain important files to a PCMCIA memory card
(9) This is an HP Omnibook 4150. Boot option Diagnostics report all functions OK

Any suggestions
