During the boot of windows xp home edition if I move the
mouse pointer the system with do a total lock up. The
only way to fix it is to press the machine reset button.
On rare occasions it will stay locked up after the re-boot
and need another reset. I tried surfing for solutions and
the only hint of the possible cause had to do with IRQs?
Changing to a different mouse and reinstalling mouse
drivers didn't help, although I may have done something
wrong there.

What mouse, and where does it connect? (PS/2 or USB?)
If USB, can you try a PS/2 mouse and see if that works?

Its a PS2 mouse, and I don't have any USB mice

Does this happen in safe mode as well?
(Hit F8 before XP starts to load, and select safe mode).

When did this start, and how long (if at all) did it work
since installing XP?

My system is doing exactly the same thing - just loaded XP
as an upgrade from 98. The mouse is a Logitech
rollerball, and it plugs in directly to the mouse port on
an IBM Netvista computer.
