mouse hangs on Anti-Virus applications

My computer has been randomly freezing up and my mouse wouldn't move. I
found it to be related to my Norton Internet Sercurity updating, it would
use 95-100% cpu time and lockup my Pc. After doing some digging I found it
was an issue so I uninstalled NIS and installed AVG.

Now here's my issue again.
While scanning (manual) my machine after installing AVG I found my mouse was
locked up and inop again, "kind of".
AVG was only running at approx. 60-80% when this was happening. The only way
to get my mouse pointer movement back was to reboot the Pc.

Here's what I've noticed on both occasions (both NIS and AVG);
While moving the mouse the 'pointer' doesn't move but windows recognises the
movement of the mouse. I can see icons hi-lite as I move the mouse and I can
stop on a 'hi-lited' icon and click the mouse. I just don't get any pointer
movement with my actions. Sometimes I can click the mouse and it works
sometimes not but windows does see mouse movement but the pointer either
doesn't move or it changes into a double sided arrow <-> either horizontal
or vertical.

This all seems to only take place with an 'anti-virus' program.

Compaq Presario-sr1820nx, AMD64-3400+ , 512mRam, WinXPsp2 all updates, w/o
IE7

Any suggestions?

After doing some more research here and at other sites I found others
experiencing the same simptoms.
I found it to be my video card drivers.
So I backed off my "Hardware Acceleration" settings one (1) notch and that
seems to have fixed my problem. I started off at two (2) notches but bumping
it back up one doesn't affect my problem either.
Until I get time to try more / different drivers this is working. Not a fix
but a work around for now.
