I just experienced my first fatal error screen yesterday. My backups in my
external hard drive were wiped out. So, I started from scratch. Everything is
up and running except for a few minor details.
I am trying to get my wife's family pictures back into the computer. They
were saved to CD about a month ago before I got the ext. hard drive and
started backing up to there.
I can't drag and drop the files. When I tried to copy them, I get "Cannot
copy, Cannot read from source file". One attempt at this locked my computer
down. I had to kill the power to the machine which resulted in a chkdsk scan
at start up. (Here I go again)
Back to the issue. The property box for the CD says it has a CDFS file
system. I know the computer is in NTFS. Is this the problem? The files were
dragged and dropped to the CD drive and written with the CD wizard. Am I
missing something here?
I am not being threatened with divorce or phsycal harm, just want to make
her happy.

The CD is CDFS and the computer is NTFS that is normal. Does the computer
read any CDs or is it just that specific CD that locks it? Download CDCheck
and see if it can read the CD.

Sorry it took a couple of days to get back here. I have some other problems
to work out with this computer and I have only a couple of hours a day to
work with it.
The CD problem is only with the 'home made' copies. I have found that I can
copy a file. But, I can't copy the whole CD or a folder.
When I put the CD in, I have to wait for the lights on the tower for the CD
drive to stop blinking. Then I can do something else. It's like I have to
wait for the computer to load from the CD.
When the contents of the CD are displayed, I'll click on a folder then wait.
Then I'll click on a file then wait. When the light stops blinking, I can
then copy the file. I only have 207MB on one CD. I wonder if I'll live long
enugh.
I think the lock down was from the fact I didn't realize what was happening.
When I didn't get a response from the computer I tried something else. I
think by the time the computer was starting to respond to the commands (and
loading), I had a list of tasks to do that would have made a teenager run
away from home. I think it was simply to many commands for it to keep up with.
I think the computer can't or won't load the whole CD to memory. For every
file I want ,it has to go back to the CD to find it.
I also found that the CD is a MBR partition. I sort of know what that is,
but not completely. Something to work with?
I also followed your link for the CDCheck. I kept ending up on a page
selling registry mechanic. I logged on, registered, and all that. I even
tried to buy it. Those folks really really want to sell me registry mechanic.
I will try to get the progam again tonight.
I am going to focus more on some other issues with this computer. So, I hope
you don't lose interest. My next project is to find out why windows security
says that my antivirus is off when it is not. I am beginning to think I
should just start over.
I named my computer The Challenge a few months ago. It is really living up
to it's name.
I will be watching this post and get back with the results of CDCheck.
