blue screen - fatal system error

Sue

We have a Dell Dimension 4400 that is about three years
old. We have had no issues with this unit until
yesterday.

The computer is running Windows XP. Yesterday, when
booting up the system, i received the following error
message on a Blue Screen:

Stop: C000021a {fatal system error} The session manager
initialization system process terminated unexpectedly with
a status of oxc0000034 (ox00000000 ox00000000) The system
has been shut down

I tried a power down, let the unit sit, and rebooted to
the same message.

Have not installed any new programs or XP undates.
Running Norton antivirus and ran a system scan and virus
update prior to problem occuring, BUT unit booted several
times over two or three days between this virus update and
the blue screen of death coming up.

Any suggestions on cause and possible fix? Thanks!

Sue

Hi,

This often occurs with GoBack (it's part the Norton's utilities), see:

GoBack Causes a Stop Error C000021a

Actually this is not correct. The particular BSOD problem described in that MS article is from an old version of GoBack when it was still owned by Roxio. Since this occured after having had GoBack installed and enabled already, this could be a sign of a different problem. A look at the memory dump would be helpful in determining the root cause.
