Blue screen error message

This is the error message I received on the "blue screen of death".
Stop: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xBBE51750, 0xF4229E88, 0x00000000)
Win32k.sys - Address BF837895 base at BF800000 datestamp 45fo13f6

I have windows xp professional installed on my computer.
I am not a computer wiz and do not understand what this means. My computer
is driving me crazy with this stuff. Plus, it shuts itself off at random
times. What could be causing this and how do I deal with my blue screen error
message?? Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated. I use my
computer for school so it is a very important tool for me.
Thanks so much!

0x0000008E: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
A kernel mode program generated an exception which the error handler
didn’t catch. These are nearly always hardware compatibility issues
(which sometimes means a driver issue or a need for a BIOS upgrade).

In your instance the error occurred in Win32k.sys which is a Windows
System File and therefore is most likely being affected by something
else that is running on the computer, such as the driver file(s) for
some recently installed hardware. Did you add anything to the
computer recently?

Microsoft has 2 Knowledge Base articles dealing with this particular
error code and file. However both have been fixed and you will have
these fixes if your Windows XP Pro is fully up to date, meaning
Service Pack 2 plus the subsequent critical updates have been
installed.

You can check the Service Pack level of your Windows XP by opening
Control Panel - System. The fourth line in the System section of the
Window shows your Service Pack level.

Good luck

Hi, Ron. I recently reinstalled Windows XP on my computer, about a month or
so ago now. When I did so, Windows did not recognize my sound card. At all. I
did some digging around and found out what kind of sound card I have. I
downloaded the driver off of the internet. I think this might be the issue
you mentioned in your reply. How exactly would I go about resolving this
issue? Do I need to get a new sound card? Or just delete the driver and get a
new driver for the sound card I have now?
Thanks so much!

Sorry for the delay in replying. I have been sick. Try the latest
driver from the sound card manufacturer and just install it. It
should replace the old driver.

Note: If your sound is integrated into the motherboard and not on a
separate PCI card then you need to get the sound drivers from the
motherboard manufacturer's web site.

Good luck
