Blaster Worm & Firewall

How can you tell if your Firewall is actually activated?
My parents computer has ended up with the worm and I have
tried to help walk them through the steps that is on the
security link.
When we tried to activate the firewall my mom received a
message that said couldn't enable firewall because of
shared network.
Her computer isn't hooked up with any other computers.
The only possiblity is that she has 3 different phone #'s
to use to hook to her internet service (MSN).
I don't know if this would actually make a difference or
not.
We have tried to call Microsoft Tech line but of course
they have the high call volume and refer you back to the
web site to follow the steps there.

What would we have to do to take care of this
firewall/network issue?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Any web links will
be great also.

Thanks

My question was how to tell if the firewall has been
activated.
Receiving a message saying unable to to enable because of
shared network.

You answered your own question; what does "unable to enable" mean to
you? No, it is not enabled. I don't know why the shared network should
have anything to do with it but I suggest you install one of the many
free firewalls such as Zona Alarm or Kerio. I do not trust XP's
half-baked firewall.

Miller,

If you do want to see if your firewall is running, look for Internet
Connection Firewall under Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools,
System Information, Software Environment, Services. That will tell you it's
current state and it's mode of starting.

Start/Help & Support. Do a search for 'firewall'.

Have a nice week...
