I completely upgraded my pc(went with an AMD Dual core setup) and tried to Re
install XP home. It installed fine, but when I tried to activate it I get no
Installation ID (STEP 3). The ID is the one I have to say to the MS phone
bot, then it gives me a confirmation ID. Thanks.

Retail Windows XP Home License?
Why can you not activate over the Internet?

I bought an XP Home key(no disc, got a booklet, and the MS keycode sticker)

As for internet activation: "Unable to establish a connection with the
activation server."

The exact characters that are in my installation ID field are: --------
(there are just 8 dashes)

Hi Nate,

Did you buy the XP Home Key, from Microsoft? Did you enter the 16 Digit
Product Key, when prompted to do so during installation?
Do you have an Internet Connection on the computer, after reaching the
Desktop?

Sure looks like you are trying to reinstall an OEM version of Windows.
You didn't get a retail CD for Windows because the OEM, whomever that
is, gave you a CD (or instructions on how to create one from files in a
hidden partition on the hard drive) and that CD is an image restore.
That is, when you use it, it restores an image onto the hard drive for
the model to which it is associated (so it probably won't work with your
new hardware since the OEM version is tied to specific hardware).

So just WHERE did you obtain this instance of Windows? If you didn't
get a CD, just how did you ever manage to install it? Was it
pre-installed on whatever was your old hardware? Is it an OEM version?
A retail version? If you never got a CD, guess you'll have to talk to
whomever did the pre-install on your old computer.
