bin folder is displayed on startup

Kevin J. Nielsen

Every time I start my computer, it starts with a window open. The window is
c:\Program Files\Common with a bin folder in it.

There is nothing in my startup folder and I looked in the registry and
couldnt find anything that would do this.

Does anyone know how to stop this so my computer will start up normally
without the folder open?

Thank you

Kevin

Click Start, Run, type

msconfig

...click OK. Click the Startup tab, and see if you can find that path.
If so, please report back with all information on that line.

You might find it with Regedit. Click Start, Run, type:

REGEDIT

... click OK. Press Home, F3, type or paste

c:\Program Files\Common

... and press Enter. There will be MANY references to that folder.
You're looking for a reference where the key (open folder icon in left
column) reads "Run", "Runonce", or at least has "run" in its title.

If you find such an entry where the filename after the path is damaged,
or missing, post that entry here and we'll see if it should be deleted.

Press F3 to continue the search.

Normally I tell people to type "runonce" (no quotes) into the search
pane, then click the "Run" above it. This way there will be many less
areas to search through. After an F3 and moving up to the "Run" key,
the next F3 will find the same "Runonce", so you'll have to press F3
again to continue the search.

This is caused if one of the startup entries are not formatted correctly in the registry.

Download Startup Tracker application from this page:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_starttrack.htm

Launch the program, and click the "View log" button. Post the contents of the log file here.

Thanks Elmo for your time. I did the search like you instructed and found
no references to C:\Program Files\Common with "run" in the name in the left
column. I noticed there was an entry for WinCinemanager in that folder. I
am always getting an error message that "Wincinemanager needs to be
reinstalled" Could that have something to do with it?

Thanks

This is normally rrelated to a broken registry key which tries to autostart
a program but misses double quotes around its path, so, if that path
contains spaces, the command gets truncated and, instead of executing
"c:\program files\common ffiles\bin\somefile.exe", it executes "c:\program
files\common" or something like that.

Use Regedit to have a look to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\Run and
to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\Run and look for something which
has spaces in it but no double quotes around it.

Yes. Try removing, then reinstalling "WinCinemanager".

Hi Joe, I followed your instructions and did not find any entry with run or
runonce in the title although there are a lot of entries with C:\Program
Files\Common\bin in the path.

Thanks for your time. Its no big deal, all I have to do is click the "X" to
close it but I just wonder why it is doing that.

I thought I already posted a response. Anyway, thank you Joe, I really
appreciate your time.

I just realized that the problem started occurring right after I installed
the trial version of AVG antivirus. I guess that could be the cause of it.
