Unwanted Microsoft folder opening after startup

Hi,

I'm having a Microsoft folder ("C:\Program Files\Microsoft") after startup.
Inside the folder are two other folders "Office Live" and "Search Enhancement
Pack." I don't know what happened that out of nowhere this folder is now
opening.

This folder started to launch after a small power failure yesterday. When I
turned on my computer, up popped the folder. I can close the folder but I
don't want to do that every time my machine boots up. Is there a way to stop
this?

(BTW I installed Microsoft Security Essentials yesterday. Could it be that
OneCare was preventing this folder to launch at start up? I did reboot the
machine after I installed MSE, so it might not be related?)

In the Start > Startup folder I have "Microsoft Office" and "Windows Search"

Delete the offending entries from the Startup folder.

This does not uninstall anything, just keeps them from starting every
time you boot.

I had the same problem. Everytime I started up the computer this new folder
named 'Microsoft' ("C:\Program Files\Microsoft") would open. There was
nothing inside mine though. I did some looking & figured out that I had just
installed a Belkin Easy Transfer Cable for Windows Vista because I had just
purchased a new Vista Computer and I used the Belkin cable to transfer
files from my old XP computer to the new one. I found out from tech services
that I could just delete this 'Microsoft' ("C:\Program Files\Microsoft")
folder & it wouldn't cause a problem. Although it would show up if I ever
used the Belkin Transfer Cable again.
Hope this helped.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I wonder if it's something to do with newly installed
items? I started seeing the "Microsoft" folder after I installed Microsoft
Security Essentials yesterday.

I'm going to see if uninstalling Microsoft Security Essentials and
reinstalling OneCare fixes things. I'm not sure I can delete the folder
because of the two folders inside of it.

Thanks again for the reply.

I wonder if your MSE wasn't that successful and you ended up with
damaged/corrupt program which configured to start when windows start up!

Try to check if the application is running okay and nothing complaining or a
feature it doesn't work because not installed correctly or the objects or
function broken or not installed by the installer.

If it does work then try this:
You can download this tool "AutoRuns for Windows"
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
And remove the entry from here:

[-] HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run =

"C:\ProgramFiles\Microsoft Secuirty Essentials\msseces.exe-hide"

Run disk cleanup and defrag in safe mode. Then run this command:
sfc /scannow

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. You know, now that you mention it, I did try deleting
the folder and rebooted to see what would happened -- thankfuly nothing
(wrong) did happen -- but the MSE icon loaded in the systray and stayed
"yellow" for a few seconds before turning "green". Then I restored the
Microsoft folder, rebooted and the MSE icon did not load in the systray.

When I first tried to install MSE, it detected OneCare, which I had to
uninstall. After that I didn't notice something wrong with MSE. How do I
check for broken features, objects and function?

I'm wondering about going back to OneCare (I still have a year left in my
subscription) and wait for MSE to come out of beta.

Thanks for the reply.

That is the wise decision, the MSE is a Beta and you don't need to install
Beta product on a productive machine!

Also, your system may not compatible with MSE, did you checked for the
prerequisites of MSE before installing it?

To check for broken installed feature by either uninstalling the Application
and run disk clean up then run this:
sfc /scannow to correct any damaged/corrupt system files may exist on your
system. Then try to install the MSE and if you have other security App turn
it OFF. But again that if you want BETA application installed on your
system!!!

I had no problems when OneCare beta, so I thought I'd give MSE a spin. And
since Microsoft said that OC won't be compatible with Windows 7...

I'm going to uninstall MSE, turn disk clean up and then run sfc /scannow,
followed by reinstalling OneCare. If the folder doesn't pop up after booting
up, I'll stay with OC.

Will let you know what happpened.

Thanks!

Hi nass,

Just wanted to say thanks for all of your assistance. I think the issue has

I will keep in mind about going back to OneCare as it has some feature not
present in MSE that I miss (like startup monitoring, configurable firewall
and PC tune up).

Thanks again for your assistance, it is/was truly appreciated.
