It's seems pretty straightforward. I want to backup to a CD and when I
come to the part where I have to name the file I do so and click "Next"
and always get an error message:

The backup file name could not be used [D:\12Nov05.bkf"]
Please ensure it is a valid path, and that you have sufficient access.

I am the only user on this computer -- do not sign in with a password
-- am considered to be the Administrator and have had no problems
installing software, etc.

What am I missing in this procedure?

You cant use the backup utility to backup directly to a cd.You need to save
the backup file on your C drive first,in my documents file for example and
then transfer to a cd from there.

That does seem to make sense. Isn't the purpose of the backup utility
to backup files to a removable something, including CDs?

That was the same as I thought when I first tried using it,but, the purpose of
the backup utility is to create backup files.Once the backup file has been
created it is up to you what you want to do with it.

Ntbackup.exe is very happy backing up to optical media, as long as you have
"packet writing" software installed. Install either Nero or Roxio Easy Media
Creator to obtain this capability.
