backup file name rejected

I am trying to use the backup utility in XP accessories.

Using the backup wizard, I wanted to save the backup to
my DVD drive, D:\.

Whichever file name I use, in this case sept04, I
received an error message:

"The backup file could not be used.
D:\sept04.bkf
Please ensure it is a valid path, and that you have
sufficient access"

Can someone tell me what this means? & how to remedy it?

Also, I've been trying many backup programmes, but
haven't found one that suits me. I have >6Gb of data to
backup and I want to put it on a dvd or dvd's. Can anyone
highly recommend the programme they're using? How does
XP's compare?

thanks

I believe that you need to save the backup to your disk and when that's done
you can then burn it to cd.
As far as a backup program goes I just purchsed Drive image7 I haven't used
it yet but it looks like it will do.

you need to put your backups on another harddrive partition
and then burn them to dvd

I don't think that the free backup program supports writing to DVD directly.
You need to save the file to somewhere on your HD and use another program to
copy it to the DVD.

I recommend Drive Image for making backups.

Won't work.

XP built-in backup does NOT know how to natively backup to
ANY type of optical media. It's just a very basic backup app.

I used Drive Image 4 for years in Windows98. When I upgraded to
XP, I bought Drive Image 7. It works very well. It runs completely
in Windows XP -- no dropping down to DOS or some other shell to
make a complete mirror image of your drives. It is very fast. It
backs up my entire C drive, which contains around 10 gigs of
program and data files, in under half an hour. I usually backup to
another hard drive.

You can view what files are in the backup folder, and can extract
individual files, very easily using the Drive Image file browser.
The drive you back up can be restored from XP, if it is working,
or if your computer is completely fried, you put the Drive Image
CD in and boot from it, and it creates its own restore
environment. Restoring is even faster than making the image file,
in my past experience.

You can do incrimental backups of new files if you prefer, but
I've found that the best way to perform backups is to regularly
make a mirror image of your complete drive, replacing the old
mirror or mirrors (I usually keep two mirrors of each drive).

Drive Image allows you to cut up your mirror into pieces of
whatever size you wish. If you wanted to backup your C drive to CD
disks, for example, you would simply set the program to cut the
backup into, say, 630 megabyte-sized chunks (whatever will fit
comfortably on your CDs), make the image, and copy the resulting
pieces to CD disks. Or, if you wish, you can copy directly to CDs,
or directly to DVDs, and the program will automatically span the
disks as they are written.

Drive Image seven comes with two CDs, one containing Drive Image 7
for Windows XP and Windows 2000, and the other containing Drive
Image 2002 for Windows 95, 98, ME, and NT. So you really get two
programs for the price of one. I've never found a better back up
program.

NTBackup does not output direct to DVD media, the only removable media
it recognises are tapes (and floppies). You need a third party 'packet
writing' package like DirectCD or InCD to output to one from a program
at all. With that, NTBackup will output to a DVD, but will be regarding
it as a fixed device, like a hard disk, and will not span over to a
further one, so you are limited to the size backup file that will fit
