avi joiner

I was wondering if there's a freeware program that can join *.avi
movies into one file. I have several short family clips that I'd like
to put into one file so that I can email it to the rest of my family.
TIA

Virtual Dub is very good http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/
It does a good job and has the capability to add audio background files.
Looks a bit daunting at first but is remarkably simple to join avi clips and
add background music or whatever audio.

There is a very comprehensive "how to" website for Virtual Dub at
http://nickyguides.digital-digest.com/join-split-avi.htm

I have tried Pecks Power Join too and don't like it.
Also, this is one of the opening paragraphs on the above site;

"As a word of warning, please do not use AVIChop, Pecks Power Join or AVI
Devil to try and chop an AVI because you are likely to get corrupt files.
The following will describe how to cut and join Divx files, but the same
method will work with any AVI, MJPEG, ASF or popular format that VirtualDub
can open. The exception to this is Mpeg-1 & 2 but I'll explain how to do
that in another article =). This method doesn't require that we re-encode
any file, all we are doing is cutting them."

Have fun with VD

Have you considered using Windows Movie Maker which comes with XP?

However, movie maker will convert it into a wmv file.

There is also a recent update version.

MovieMaker2 is an excellent choice for concatenating and splitting avi
files. The freeware TMPGenc can convert the wmv to avi. First, rename
the wmv extension to asf and use that as the system audio+video
source, then save the stream as an AVI file (File->Output to file->AVI
file).

OTOH, if they all use Windows perhaps the files should remain in the
wmv format since it is a high-quality compressed file type that can be
viewed with Windows Media Player or Irfanview (with plugin).
