AVG7 - takes a while

Tim

Hi, All,

Before I send an e-mail to AVG, thought I'd check with a few other users.

I'm using AVG7 Free having recently upgraded from AVG6 Free (courtesy of a BIG
hint from grisoft when I last updated). No problems with the switch to 7, a nice
straightforward evolutional change from 6 to 7.

However, whereas my overnight AVG scan used to take 30-40 mins, it now takes
roughly 3 hours. Just me, or have others noticed this too?

Cheers, Tim.

I noticed an increase in scan time of about 50% which appeared to be
due to a combination of:
1) AVG7 appears to scan more 'objects' vs AVG6.
2) AVG7 runs at a lower process priority than AVG6, which reduces the
processor load significantly and so reduces the impact on
responsiveness to user interaction.

It would be real nice to have an option to control this. One
setting(grabbing all the CPU it can get) for running the scan unattended,
and another for running it in the background while still doing other tasks.
Probably too much to ask of a free program, but I'll bet it's not in the
paid verison either.

If it is Windows XP how about setting the priority in the task
manager/running processes by clicking CTRL/ALT/DEL.

If he does it that way, the process he needs to bump up the priority on
is actually called "avgwb.dat" in the processes window tab.

Here's what I did.
If I've given inaccurate information here I hope
someone corrects me.

Windows XP, on my laptop...

With AVG Test Center running, and a scan in progress...
I pressed ctrl+alt+del to get the task manager up.
I clicked the "Processes" tab and found "avgwb.dat"
I right clicked "avgwb.dat" and then moved the cursor to "set priority".
That opened a list of options and I set it to "high".

This cut my scan time from 1 hr. 15 min. to 39 min., but made doing other
tasks respond more slowly.

The next time I scanned I had to reset the priority to high again.
