AVG7

for the last year or so I have been using AVG6 Free Antivirus from
Grisoft and have been extremely happy with it. It has been a nice
simple to use and effective Antivirus for my home PC. Now they are
going to stop doing updates for AVG6 at the end of December and
telling people to upgrade to AVG7.

I downloaded AVG7 (free edition) from their website the other day and
I cannot stand it. There are so many changes and so many settings and
I found it to be confusing to use and changed a lot of settings in
Windows and my email (A lot of the emails coming into the inbox
started having the little attachment paper clip with them!) and then
OE had problems finding host and timed out.

I have hastilly unloaded AVG7 now and gone back to using AVG6 again
for the moment but what will I do at the end of this month I dont
know.

Can any recommend another antivirus free edition software for home
use as simple to use and set-up as AVG6 free and just as effective
with free updates? - (apart from kaspersky)

Thank you.

Avast!

The paperclips are easy to remove:

This is an earlier post from "GrimReaper":
AVG 7.290
Double Click on the e-mail scanner box. Then Click on Configure
button. Then
uncheck the box Certify mail ( under the checked box Check Outgoing
Mail)

Can you not stretch to circa 40 euros a year for something like NOD32?
Dead easy to use, and an extremely effective AV utility.

Seconded - great piece of software.

Thirded... :)

I tried Avast recently, and then returned to AVG, but there are too many
ongoing/perpetual update problems with AVG, and no solution in sight. So,
although a longtime AVG user, I'm switching to Avast. The only thing I have
against Avast is that it seems to slow down my computer more than AVG.

If you search on Google for "Free Microsoft Antivirus", you will find a
page that lets you download Computer Associates ezArmor - free for one year.

I've done it for my family members, and they seem to be getting along
fine with it.

Thanks, I might give that a try sometime. I am trying out
http://www.free-av.com at the moment and it doesnt seem too bad.

It's fine but updating seems to require you to download and
install the whole application every time and the servers are
often slow.

It happens that Jock. formulated :

If you use the Internet Updater (AntiVir - Tools/ Start Internet
Update) only those files which are updated, will be replaced.
Of course you can allways "program" your automatic updates via AntiVir
Scheduler.

I have Free-AV on the two Windows 98SE machines. On this XP machine I use
the paid AVG which is excellent.

I accept Internet Updater when the app suggests I update, but it then
downloads a whole pile of files and then requires me to install the
programme. Every time!

I'll have another look at it.

It seems to me that a major source of problems is the e-mail scanning
(which is new to AVG7 Free?).

If you do not need e-mail scanning, then you can choose not to install
that component & I expect there will then be less problems. That is
what I did.

I upgraded to AVG 7 a few days ago and I've had no problems with the
e-mail scanning. It worls the same as it did in AVG 6 for me. But I
use Eudora, not Outlook Express.

I am using AVG 7 Pro (not free) with the email scanner set-up for Mozilla
Thunderbird and it works fine.

OK it was a fiddle to set-up but once working there has not been a problem.

The good thing about AVG is their small incremental updates (well most of the
time anyway), and their software does not seem to be as much of a drain on
system resources as McAfee, Norton or CA's ETrust.

I've been using the paid version of AVG 7 with EMail scanning with Eudora
6.1 for over a year without problems.

If you don't want EMail scanning switch it off. Launch Control Centre;
Double click on EMail Scanner panel; [Disable plugin].

Andy,

Its free for one year only at this address:-

http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/

Its called EZArmour which is AV plus Firewall - though u can opt not to install
the firewall when running the install program itself.

There is an article about it here:-
