Hello,
After years of AVG6 (free version) I upgraded to AVG7 (free version) a few
days ago. I was a bit wary about this as I'd read about problems with Zone
Alarm. I'm running ZA Pro. It all seemed to install fine and I'm not
really having any problems with the new user interface. What has started
happening today and for no obvious reason (I've not changed anything) I keep
getting the message 'E-mail scanner is not fully functional' whenever I log
onto the computer. It shows on the green/red/yellow box in the taskbar ...
with the icon showing as various shades of grey but e-mail still available
... and it says it in the e-mail box in the control centre.
Anybody any ideas what is going on??
There are (4) .exe files associated with AVG's operation. The first
two are loaded as windows "services", and are set to run automatically
(by default at bootup) when you first installed free AVG 7:
AVGAMSVR.EXE - (AVG's alerts manager service)
AVGUPSVC.EXE - (AVG's updater service)
The other two are .exe files that are processes also set to run at
bootup (by default in the AVG installaion process), these are:
AVGCC.EXE - (The AVG control center icon in your systray)
AVGEMC.EXE - (AVG's email scanner module)
If the AVGEMC.EXE (scanner) process is not running when the AVGCC.EXE
(control center program) is launched, it's detecting this and trying to
alert you to this.
Run windows task manager when this alert shows up and see if the
AVGEMC.EXE program is indeed running (in the 'Processes' window tab).
If the process *is* running, but you are still getting the 'E-mail
scanner is not fully functional' alert at bootup/logon as well as the
'greyed' AVG icon, this is an indication that the email scanner is not
properly *configured*, or disabled. If so, open the control center, and
right mouse click on the email scanner plugin, and select 'Activate'.
Unless you are using Outlook (I think the Outlook plugin works with
Outlook Express as well), you will need to use the 'Personal Email
Scanner' option, and have the 'personal test configuration' radio
button/option checked.
Also, you need to make sure you have the properties setting set
correctly for the email/newsreader client you are using.
For example, I use Mozilla Thunderbird, and have AVG's email scanner
server properties set to 'FIXED HOST', and entered my ISP's POP3/SMTP
servers (you can specify these by name or, if you know them, their IP
addresses), but have ports 5200 & 5100 (respectively) specified as my
POP3/SMTP server ports (instead of the default 110/25 port numbers
normally used by POP3/SMTP servers.)
You also have to configure your email client correctly. For example,
I have Mozilla Thunderbird itself configured to use the localhost IP
address of my computer (the local IP# of any computer is 127.0.0.1) as
my incoming(POP3)/outgoing(SMTP) _servers_, and use the same port
settings (above) as my POP3(5200)/SMTP(5100) _ports_.
Hope that helps.
