AVG 7 (Free version) email scanner

Hello,

After years of AVG6 (free version) I upgraded to AVG7 (free version) a few
days ago. I was a bit wary about this as I'd read about problems with Zone
Alarm. I'm running ZA Pro. It all seemed to install fine and I'm not
really having any problems with the new user interface. What has started
happening today and for no obvious reason (I've not changed anything) I keep
getting the message 'E-mail scanner is not fully functional' whenever I log
onto the computer. It shows on the green/red/yellow box in the taskbar ...
with the icon showing as various shades of grey but e-mail still available
.... and it says it in the e-mail box in the control centre.

Anybody any ideas what is going on??

Thanks in advance.

You will have to open the control and check the settings for email, perhaps
it's just that you don't have the signature set to show on outgoing mail. It
will be something trivial. My friend had the same problem.

Hi Leekar/All,

I've defaulted all the setting and tried with different settings to no avail
..... but what I have learned is that if I shut AVG down with the email
scanner not fully functional message showing and then start it up it comes
up OK. It runs for exactly 5 minutes and then the icon goes grey and the
email not fully functional message shows again. If I shut it down it will
come back up all ok, five mins later, email not functional scanner not fully
functional again. Any ideas??

Have you de-activated the e-mail plug-in? This did the trick for me.

Hi burris,

Well that seems to have done the trick (I tipped ignore plug in status).

That just leaves me to wonder what is not being looked at by AVG??!! I use
OExpress 6 which always seems to need a plugin of some sort or other.

Phil

Hi burris,

Well that seemed to do the trick - I ticked the 'ignore plugin status' box.

I wonder what that actually means?? I use Outlook Express 6 which always
seems to use plugins.

See ya,

Phil....

Glad it worked...

As an aside, I always thought that Outhouse Express needed to be totally
plugged up. :))

There are (4) .exe files associated with AVG's operation. The first
two are loaded as windows "services", and are set to run automatically
(by default at bootup) when you first installed free AVG 7:

AVGAMSVR.EXE - (AVG's alerts manager service)
AVGUPSVC.EXE - (AVG's updater service)

The other two are .exe files that are processes also set to run at
bootup (by default in the AVG installaion process), these are:

AVGCC.EXE - (The AVG control center icon in your systray)
AVGEMC.EXE - (AVG's email scanner module)

If the AVGEMC.EXE (scanner) process is not running when the AVGCC.EXE
(control center program) is launched, it's detecting this and trying to
alert you to this.

Run windows task manager when this alert shows up and see if the
AVGEMC.EXE program is indeed running (in the 'Processes' window tab).

If the process *is* running, but you are still getting the 'E-mail
scanner is not fully functional' alert at bootup/logon as well as the
'greyed' AVG icon, this is an indication that the email scanner is not
properly *configured*, or disabled. If so, open the control center, and
right mouse click on the email scanner plugin, and select 'Activate'.

Unless you are using Outlook (I think the Outlook plugin works with
Outlook Express as well), you will need to use the 'Personal Email
Scanner' option, and have the 'personal test configuration' radio
button/option checked.

Also, you need to make sure you have the properties setting set
correctly for the email/newsreader client you are using.

For example, I use Mozilla Thunderbird, and have AVG's email scanner
server properties set to 'FIXED HOST', and entered my ISP's POP3/SMTP
servers (you can specify these by name or, if you know them, their IP
addresses), but have ports 5200 & 5100 (respectively) specified as my
POP3/SMTP server ports (instead of the default 110/25 port numbers
normally used by POP3/SMTP servers.)

You also have to configure your email client correctly. For example,
I have Mozilla Thunderbird itself configured to use the localhost IP
address of my computer (the local IP# of any computer is 127.0.0.1) as
my incoming(POP3)/outgoing(SMTP) _servers_, and use the same port
settings (above) as my POP3(5200)/SMTP(5100) _ports_.

Hope that helps.

After I posted my other response to your question, I dawned on me to
check the message header of your original post, and I see you are using
Outlook Express.

AVG's Microsoft Outlook plugin might work as well for Outlook Express,
but if it doesn't, you'll have to use the personal email scanner/
personal test configuration that I described in my other post in this
thread.

Rick,

Thanks for a great reply ... how u guys know all this is amazing. Anyway,
the four files are running ... but at the moment all is fine. If AVG drops
out I'll check my processes again.

Cheers,

I've noticed that on Windows XP with multiple profiles, if I have more than
one User Account active at the same time (by pressing Windows-L), I will
get the AVG e-mail error you describe on the second User Account. (For
example, if my wife's profile is active, and I go into my profile without
closing her's out.) It fixes itself if I close out of one of the profiles.

Steve,

Thanks for that .... I think you might be onto something there .... I've
often thought it has been to do with that (espec now son is home and often
have two or three logged on) but not been able to prove it. I checked in
the error log and it said something like not able to connect to two ports
simultaneously (SMTP/POP) .... but looking back you can see instances where
it has ... when I guess only one person was logged on.

Will try and prove that theory.

So passe' using terminology like that (e.g. Winblows, etc). Just say no to
AVG, that's all I can say :)
