AVG7 Free - location of updates?

S

Spalls Hurgenson

I use AVG (free) as a "second opinion" back-up scanner for my handful
of computers. With AVG6 (Free) I was able to download an update to one
machine and then copy the contents of the UPDATES folder to a network
share where AVG on the other computers could grab it (since I only
have a dial-up connection, this saved me significant bandwidth).

Unfortunately, with the release of the new v.7 version of AVG free,
the "Updates" folder has disappeared and it is not immediately evident
which files in the main program directory are the downloaded updates.
Thus, my previous method of distributing the updates to multiple
machines no longer works. The "update from folder" option remains in
the AVG "Control Center" so obviously it's still possible, but how?
I'd rather not have to make the AVG program directory into another
open share, if possible.

I e-mailed Grisoft but they've declined to reply, so I figured I'd ask
here...

Mine is in

C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\update

note "update" NOT "updates"

Very odd; I have no such folder. There is a "Grisoft" directory in
Program Files, but it is empty. There are no sub-directories at all in
the AVG program-directory. This is true on all the computers I
installed AVG v7 on.

AVG 6 *did* have an UPDATE (not UPDATES, sorry) folder... did you
perhaps uninstall AVG6 and then install AVG7 to the same directory?

No, I used the auto install feature, and it "emptied" the old AVG6
subdirectory and created the new AVG FREE subdirectory.

IIRC, I manually added the new Update directory to AVG Free which was
present in the old AVG6, based on my reading of something on the AVG site
re. manual updating.

"Update" now contains only "u7avi3977t.bin" which is a manual update file -
not necessarily the latest, as the auto update now seems to work OK.

Here's the sequence for manual updates

(1) Create the folder update, as in "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG
Free\update"

(2) Go to:
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/Get+AVG+Update/lng/us/tpl/v5

(3) Download the latest update file ( it's now u7avi398lj.bin ) into that
directory

(4) Run AVG - it will automatically load the new file ( if it's newer than
what you now have )

As I said, the auto update feature / servers now seem to be up to speed, but
save this for future reference.

Okay, found my solution... turns out AVG7 saves its updates in the

c:\documents and settings\all users\application
data\Grisoft\AVG7Data\avg7upd

directory. Silly me, I checked the application data folder for my own
username but didn't bother to check AllUsers. Fortunately, a
file-search for the updated file (u7avi398u392lj.bin) set me straight.

Still wish it had kept the updates in the AVG program folder; I'm not
a fan of having files scattered all about my hard-drive. But oh well.

I have the same problem between 2 computers.
In version 6 there was a directory as you show, but in my version 7
there is no subdirectory within AVG.

Personally I didnt think AVG 7 was free, where did you get it from?

It's a recent upgrade; I first heard about it myself from a post in
this newsgroup 10 days ago. Get it from www.grisoft.com

(and in case anyone missed the answer to my original question: AVG7
now stores it update files in

c:\documents and settings\all users\application
data\Grisoft\AVG7Data\avg7upd

(beware word-wrap :)

Not for those using Win98SE - it's:

C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\update

You are absolutely right - mine has

C:\windows\All Users\Application Data\Grisoft\Avg7Data\upd7bin

as the destination for the latest update file, which is

u7avi400kp.bin.

I created the C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\update to mimic the AVG6
procedure when the autoupdate was balking at the intro of AVG7. AVG6 had a
similar folder.

Autoupdate puts the .bin file in the directory you specified, but for some
reason will find it if you manually download it and place it in "my"
subdirectory, via

http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/Get+AVG+Update/lng/us/tpl/v5

Perhaps it's an heirloom from AVG6, and I just stumbled on a work-around.
The autoupdate is working fine now - I assume if you manually place the .bin
file in the "upd7bin" folder AVG7 would find it - I'll try it next update.
